Image: Hull Daily MailA frustrated Hull taxi driver who says his car windows have been smashed three times in two years wants it to be easier for people to convert their front gardens into secure parking spaces.
Alkhamyr Ali says every time the smash-and-grab thefts occured, his car has been parked in the street outside his home in Endike Lane in north Hull.
He says the latest incident on Friday morning was captured by own home CCTV system.
Footage shows a youth on a bicycle carrying a bag circling his vehicle before pulling up next to the driver's window.
The youth then appears to pull something from the bag before smashing the window, reaching into the car and then riding off again.
Mr Ali said a small quantity of cash had been stolen from his car in the incident.
He said: "I moved here just over two years ago and this is the third time this has happened.
"It's frustrating because after the last one I asked the city council about installing a dropped kerb so I could park my car in the front garden.
"They told me I would need to get planning permission for it and then I would have to use a specific contractor which would cost me somewhere between £1,500 and £2,000.
"I asked a different company what they would charge and they told me it would be no more than £400.
"I think it's just too much to have to pay for trying to make sure my car is secure."
Mr Ali said more police patrols were needed to combat the problem. "You report these things to the police but nothing ever happens and you still end up having to pay the insurance excess for the repairs," he said.
"I would like to see the police stopping and searching these kids riding around at night."
He said his next door neighbour had also suffered late-night damage to his car in recent months.
Last month Hull North MP Diana Johnson led a House of Commons debate on anti-social behaviour, highlighting a series of recent problems in her own constituency.
Blaming cuts to police and council funding, she said: " Anti-social behaviour is in every constituency up and down the land.
"We have seen such a cut to councils, police and youth service that we are reaping the rewards now. It feels like it has reached a tipping point.
"People do not feel safe in their homes. We are seeing less police on the beat, we don’t see PSCOs as much as we did and, in Hull, community wardens have also gone."
Hull City Council has been approached for comment on the issue of dropped kerbs.
