Nothing much to see here in terms of policy, but two odd things:

- According to the article the trade supports both the dress code and points system, which seems unusual.

- The licensing chair seems to think Tamworth is breaking new ground here... :-s

Taxi drivers told to dress smarter in Staffordshire town

The move is part of plans to bring tighter controls on taxi licensing in the borough, which have been hailed as ‘a first of a kind’

Tamworth’s taxi drivers are being urged to smarten up their appearances under a new borough council initiative.

Cut-off jeans, vests and flip flops are among the items of clothing to be banned, as councillors say they give the wrong impression of the town - reports the Tamworth Herald .

Tamworth council has voted to adopt a taxi licensing points system for drivers and operators who breach conditions.

Alongside that, they are putting through a dress code to ensure those drivers licensed by Tamworth Borough Council, present themselves in the best possible light.

It is a scheme that Cllr Ben Price, who heads up the licensing committee, believes has never been done before.

He said: “We have discussed for years about how we can improve the taxi service across Tamworth. It has been something we have been looking to do.

“We came up with an idea, much like your driving licence, that saw points being accrued over time. It is a one-of-a-kind policy that we are putting out there and hopefully one that other people will look at and adopt in their own areas.”

The point system will see drivers totting up points for various offences, offences that under the old scheme would have led to a slap on a wrist and nothing else.

Cllr Price added: “Take smoking in the taxi for instance. Normally what would happen before this policy is that if an officer sees a driver smoking in his taxi they would get a bit of a slap on the wrist, a verbal warning.

“Chances are they could do that again and get the same punishment. What this will do now is give them three points on their taxi licence. If they do it three times that would trigger coming in front of committee automatically

“We have spoken extensively to the trade and they are right behind it.

“We are aiming to cut out the minor things that give the taxi trade a bad appearance at times.”

And it is appearance that is at the forefront of another part of the new initiative as drivers will now have a dress code for the first time within the borough.

Cllr Price said: “We are not saying uniform or anything like that, we are just saying smart casual. Make the right impression.

“Our taxi drivers have the Tamworth Borough Council logo on. They go to the train station to pick people up. They are the gateway to the town.

“If they are there in cut-off jeans, in vests, in flip-flops, it is going to look bad on us as a town.

“We want them to make the right impression as they are representing the town. It is just a way of ensuring we are making the right kind of impact.”

The motion to adopt the new system was unanimously voted in at a full council meeting on Tuesday night.

Is that really a dress code, or a statement of the f***ing obvious?

Now if he was saying that 20 years ago, I would agree, but he is not and it's a bit rich someone claiming to have invented the wheel when dozens of council have been operating a points system for many many years.
