Anyway, seem to be split-CV-gaiter day in Derby. Quite a common and easily detected fault, I think, so surprising we don't read of more of them on here

City centre taxis were found with defects so serious they had their licences suspended.
Five out of six taxis checked by police showed dangerous issues ranging from split brake hoses to insecure passenger steps.
Four vehicles had defects so severe officers placed them on prohibition and the council suspended their licence.
A spokesman for Derbyshire police said the fifth vehicle was suspended by the council.
A 2003 Volkswagen Passat being used as a private hire vehicle had its front brake hoses split.
Its constant-velocity gaiter split had also split and the wiper was not properly clearing the screen. The vehicle was given a vehicle prohibition notice (PG9) and had its licence suspended.

A 2004 Peugeot hackney carriage was found to have excessive corrosion to both outer body sills.
The outer constant-velocity had gaiter split and the intercom unit was fitted incorrectly, being "likely to cause injury to passengers". The brake house and sensor was also insecure.
A 2006 Peugeot hackney carriage had its outer constant-velocity gaiter deformed meaning failure was imminent.
The passenger step was also insecurely mounted, potentially causing a trip hazard due to poor standard of modification to the wheelchair ramp cover.
A 2004 TX2 was found to have a severe leak of power steering fluid.
The gearbox oil cooler pipes were fouling the steering track rod and the rear shackle bushes were worn to excess.

In a Facebook post, Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said: "Earlier in the week we conducted our monthly taxi checks with Derby City Council.
"Would love to say it was glowing reports all round but we checked 6 vehicles and of those 5 were found with defects. 4 had defects so serious we placed a prohibition on them and the council suspended their licence. The fifth was suspended by the council.

"Some highlights of the ones we prohibited and their main faults. There were other additional minor faults and non-compliance with council standards on most vehicles.
"Trying again next month for those that were suddenly disappearing out of the city with no fares when they saw we were out doing checks."
A spokesperson for Derby City Council said: “We regularly work with our police colleagues to conduct safety checks on taxis, and unfortunately results like these are not uncommon.
“Though a large number of drivers take great care of their vehicles, there are vehicles that do not meet the standards we’d expect.
“We’re currently consulting on a Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Strategy for Derby, which we published earlier this year. The draft strategy aims – among many other things – to improve safety.
“We would encourage anyone who plans to take the time to write a comment on this story, to instead do something that can actually make a difference, and complete the consultation.
“It takes no more than ten minutes, and can be completed on a phone, laptop, computer, tablet or iPad at derby.gov.uk/taxistrategy2020. If you don't have access to any of these, you can book a computer at any of our Derby Libraries, or at the Council House.
