Reading taxi driver revoked of licence for driving on pavement https://www.readingchronicle.co.uk/news ... -pavement/ A TAXI driver who was caught driving on the pavement on two separate occasions has had his licence revoked. The first offence committed by Manzoor Hussain, of Combe Road, Tilehurst, was spotted by police officers on April 5 last year. they witnessed the 44-year-old driving from St Mary’s Butts to Oxford Road via the pavement in front of Metro bank and across the entrance to the Broad Street Mall to avoid traffic. On May 16 2018 he was caught on CCTV driving across the pavement outside Tesco Express on Oxford Road to avoid having to reverse into a parking space. The council’s licensing committee revoked Mr Hussain’s licence at a meeting in August as members concluded he was not a fit and proper person to hold a licence. Mr Hussain subsequently appealed the decision of the licensing committee and had his case heard at Reading Magistrates' Court on March 18. The court dismissed his appeal and ordered him to pay legal costs of £500. |

A true tale from a former London transport driving instructor, he would sometimes get back to chiswick driving school and tell a newbie that the previous bloke had passed his test despite driving along The Pavement in Clapham. For those who know Clapham, and for those who don't, a stretch of the A3 is called The Pavement! so driving along The Pavement there s quite legal.

The fact that he was caught twice driving on the pavement makes you wonder exactly how many times he did it. Possibly 100s. |

Taxi Driver Loses Second Appeal to Keep his Licence After Driving on Pavement A HACKNEY carriage driver who was caught driving on the pavement on two separate occasions has twice lost his appeal to retain his licence. Manzoor Hussain, age 46, of Combe Road, Tilehurst, had his taxi licence revoked by the Council’s Licensing Committee in August 2018 and lost his appeal to Reading Magistrates Court in March 2019. His case was again considered at Reading Crown Court on 25th September 2019 where the court dismissed his appeal and ordered Mr Hussain to pay £2,000 costs. The first offence committed by Manzoor Hussain was spotted by a police community support officer on 5th April 2018. Officers witnessed the 46-year-old driving from St Mary’s Butts to Oxford Road via the pavement in front of Metro bank and across the entrance to the Broad Street Mall to avoid traffic. On 16th May 2018 he was caught on CCTV driving across the pavement outside Tesco Express on Oxford Road. The Council’s Licensing Committee revoked Mr Hussain’s licence as members concluded he was not a fit and proper person to hold a licence. Cllr Tony Page, Lead Councillor for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport, said: “It is essential that the behaviour of taxi drivers, licensed by Reading Council, meet the high standards expected and that the Council takes action when required. “I would like to thank the Council officers involved for seeing this case through and helping to secure a satisfactory outcome. Thanks to the hard work of the Council’s licensing team, we are sending out a very clear message this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. “I hope this case acts as a deterrent to other taxi drivers who may be tempted to flout the law in Reading.” |

Possibly, but on the other hand he might have just been unlucky, and lost his licence while worse offenders get off scot free. And while you really need to see the evidence to properly assess these things (they often sound a lot worse than they actually were), at first glance revocation sounds a bit harsh. |
