A city taxi driver has been left without his vehicle - and his income - after his cab was smashed up and smeared with food.

Alexandru Moise, who has been a cab driver since 2012, said he was only alerted to the incident on Monday morning after police called at his front door in Seymour Avenue with the news.

He said: "I've always left it there. I have a parking permit and have never had any trouble with my neighbours."

Alexandru was told a young woman had begun swinging a waste bag at his Vauxhall Vivaro, repeatedly smashing it against his bonnets, windscreen, wing mirrors and side panels.

Shocked residents called the police shortly after 11am and they attended the scene, arresting a woman on suspicion of criminal damage.

Alexandru said: "It's very strange behaviour. I don't know her, never spoken to her in my life, don't even know her name. Why somebody would smash up by car, I just don't know.

"The bonnet and two side doors were damaged, the windscreen smashed, the side mirrors struck. Oil, milk, butter, spaghetti and even bananas were smeared over the taxi. I think there were sausages as well.

"I was in the shower at the time and my wife had said she heard glass smashing, thinking it was one of our student neighbours drinking in the garden. I thought 'leave it' and didn't think any more of it. Then 10 minutes later the police were knocking on the door and they told me my car was attacked."

Alexandru said his cab will be off the road while the windscreen is fixed and some friends have rallied around to help him with payment until he is back working.

He said: "It's my living and without my cab I cannot do my job, I can't work. My friends are helping me with money to get me back on the road as soon as possible. I just don't understand why my taxi was targeted."

A police spokesman said: "Police were called 11am on 6 May to reports of a black taxi cab being damaged on Seymour Avenue, Plymouth.

"A 22-year-old woman from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and has been bailed until 8 May pending further police enquiries."
