Spalding taxi firm launches card and phone pay inside the cab

Spalding firm Royal Taxis believes it is the first cab company in Lincolnshire to enable customers to pay by card or phone inside the taxi.

Drivers are equipped to take payments by debit and credit card, including American Express, and via Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Boss Mroof Choudry says it's more convenient for customers, and it's safer for drivers who will be carrying less cash.

Mroof said: "I believe we are probably the first one in Lincolnshire."

There is no minimum spend for the service.

Either the guy's talking pish or the likes of the Stamford firms are obviously the dinosaurs of the Lincs trade [-(

Never heard of anyone called Mroof, though. If you said Mroof up here someone would probably ask, "What about your roof?" :-s

He might believe he’s the first, but he’s probably the last.

And he’s paying over the odds for that terminal.

I've been taking cards for 5 years !!!

Stamford is often first

More kings and Queens have stayed in Stamford than elsewhere in Lincolnshire

we even became the capital of England very briefly (about 2 weeks allegedly)

we were the very first town in Lincolnshire to get a train service

I could list more but won't bother too much effort finding dates etc.

That was my immediate thought.

I was assuming that maybe the 'first' here wasn't so much the card payments as Google pay and Apple pay, but are they pretty bog standard as well these days?

Yep.

Some people pay with a card, some with a phone, and some with a watch.

At our night rank very few people ask to pay by card at this time of the year, in fact quite sure I could go a week or two without anyone asking. And if anyone does, it tends to be either/or.

In Feb (say) when it's mostly students, it's a different story entirely, and sometimes it seems that there are more asking to pay by card than I actually get fares  Or at least it feels that way

And the students tend to be card/contactless-only - they won't have the cash alternative.

The local station is possibly a bit different in this regard, but again the students are noticeably more inclined to only offer cards. But often it's just a case of offering to take them to a cash point when we get to town :)

The cash point thing doesn't work in town, though, because there's plenty of cash points nearby, thus they obviously can't/won't pay with cash.

But even in the last 12 months or so there's been noticeably more students asking to pay by card, so I suppose all the drivers will have to offer it eventually :?

20-30% of my punters pay by card.
