Launched attack in a moving taxi, Perth Sheriff Court hears

Court to probe alleged stab threat

An offshore worker attacked a taxi driver as he drove him home to a house in Scone.

Fifty-year-old Michael Todd, who worked for Thistle Taxis, was left bleeding from his ear as he tried to ward off repeated blows while he brought the car to a stop.

The driver exited the vehicle in the Bridgend area of the city and tried to flag down a passing car but 44-year-old Richard Donaldson then chased him, again throwing multiple punches.

An unknown car drew up and Mr Todd managed to get back into his taxi.

But the accused ran towards the vehicle, forcing the victim to reverse in a bid to escape.

“At this point, the accused had his T-shirt off and was making threatening gestures to the complainer and challenging him to fight,” depute fiscal Catriona MacQueen told the court.

The police were contacted and Donaldson, of David Douglas Avenue, Scone, was spotted in Strathmore Street.

Officers pulled their van over to speak to him but he became aggressive and refused to provide any personal details.

And when he was told he was under arrest - and handcuffs were produced - he told officers to “f*** off,” explained the fiscal.

When cautioned and interviewed, Donaldson told them he “couldn’t remember what happened.”

Ms MacQueen added that the taxi driver appeared to be “visibly shaken and bleeding from his ear.” But he didn’t require any medical treatment.

The court was told that the incident had taken place after the accused got into the taxi at Perth Railway Station around 8pm after leaving a train.

The accused asked to be taken to the “new houses at Scone.”

Ms MacQueen added: “During the journey the complainer (Mr Todd) observed, out of the corner of his eye, that the accused kept turning and glaring at him.

“He asked if there was a problem and the accused said: ‘Yes, I’m going to f***ing stab you.’

“The accused then attacked him while he was driving by throwing punches at the complainer’s face and body.

“The complainer tried to defend himself by putting his arms up while trying to bring the car to a stop.”

The accused previously admitted by letter that he assaulted Mr Todd by repeatedly punching him on the head and body in Perth’s Strathmore Street on August 14 last year - and repeatedly pursuing him.

He also pled guilty to threatening police and behaving in an aggressive manner towards them.

In his letter, the accused claimed that “no matter how much alcohol he had consumed, he would never threaten to stab anyone.”

Solicitor Paul Ralph said that remained his client’s position.

Sheriff Keith O’Mahony fixed a hearing for August 12 to determine if the stab threat had been made.

In the meantime, he called for background reports on Donaldson, including a restriction of liberty order assessment.

Scone oil exec admits battering taxi driver before chasing him topless around vehicle

An oil industry executive carried out an unprovoked attack on a taxi driver which ended with him topless and chasing the terrified cabbie around his vehicle.

Richard Donaldson started raining blows on driver Michael Todd, 50, without warning as he was driving and allegedly told him he was going to stab him.

Mr Todd fought to maintain control of his car as the bizarre attack lasted several minutes, Perth Sheriff Court was told.

Donaldson, 44, who works for an energy firm and claims to have “excellent inter-personal skills” in his online profile, swore at police officers.

Depute fiscal Catriona MacQueen said Donaldson got into the taxi and gave vague directions to his home in Scone. Mr Todd set off in that direction from Perth railway station at 8pm on August 14 last year.

“During the journey the complainer observed out of the corner of his eye that the accused kept turning and glaring at him,” said Ms MacQueen.

“He asked if there was a problem and the accused said ‘yes, I’m going to stab you’.”

Donaldson, who admitted a charge of assault, started attacking the complainer as he was driving by throwing punches at his face and body.

The court was told that Donaldson, of David Douglas Avenue, denied saying he would stab his victim and sentence was deferred for reports and a proof in mitigation over that part of the Crown’s evidence.

Drink and drugs turn otherwise normal people into nasty individuals.

However we are all still responsible for our actions, so I hope this scumbag gets his very just rewards.

I've changed the first article to a slightly more interesting version (from the taxi driver perspective) from the Daily Record.

However, the Courier article is still there as well, because the Daily Record article doesn't include the stuff about the 'oil executive' with the 'excellent interpersonal skills'

Which just goes to show how a few words can change your perception of things. The Daily Record simply says that he was an 'offshore worker', thus statistically more likely to be a roughneck or roustabout rather than an 'oil executive'

Although I would have thought that most 'oil executives' would work onshore rather than offshore :?

Oil exec ordered to pay £500 to Perth taxi driver he battered and threatened to stab

https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/lo ... d-to-stab/

A passenger has been ordered to pay a taxi driver £500 after attacking him during a bizarre topless rampage.

Oil industry executive Richard Donaldson told the driver he was going to stab him as he chased him around his vehicle during the unprovoked attack.

Donaldson, who earns £4,000 pounds a month, started raining blows on Michael Todd, 33, without warning as he was driving and told him he would knife him.

Mr Todd fought to maintain control of his car during the bizarre attack which lasted several minutes, Perth Sheriff Court was told.

Donaldson, 44, who works for an energy firm swore at officers when they tried to tackle him.

Depute fiscal Catriona MacQueen told the court: “The accused got into the taxi and the complainer asked where he was going. The accused replied ‘home’.”

Donaldson gave vague directions to his home in Scone and Mr Todd set off in that direction from Perth railway station at 8pm on August 14 last year.

“During the journey the complainer observed out of the corner of his eye that the accused kept turning and glaring at him.”

Mr Todd asked if there was a problem and the accused said he was going to stab him. Donaldson then started attacking him as he was driving by throwing punches at his face and body.

Ms MacQueen said: “The complainer tried to defend himself by putting his arms up while trying to bring the car to a stop. He stopped and exited the car and tried to flag down passers-by for help.

“The accused also exited the taxi and began to chase the complainer round the car, throwing punches and trying to attack him,” the depute fiscal said.

“He struck the complainer on the right ear, causing it to bleed. At this point the complainer got back in the taxi and the accused began to walk off in the direction of Scone.

“He then began to run at the taxi, causing the complainer to reverse away to avoid him. Police were contacted.

“A witness was flagged down by the complainer.

“The accused had taken his T-shirt off and was shouting something towards the complainer and making threatening gestures, as if to challenge him to a fight.”

Be interested to know what penalty he got for the offence, rather than just the compensation to the driver.
