Taxi driver traps yob in cab after racially-aggravated assault

https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/d ... ab-3055274

Roy Greasly had to be dragged into the police car

A Derby yob was locked in a taxi after he subjected the driver to racial abuse.

Roy Greasly, from Mackworth, was locked in the vehicle while his victim waited for the police to arrive.

He appeared before magistrates for using racially-abusive language towards a driver while on his way home from a night out in Derby city centre.

Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court heard how he swore at the driver when he asked him for his address and postcode when they got to Prince Charles Avenue, in Mackworth.

The driver was able to get out of the car and lock the 32-year-old inside while he waited for officers to arrive.

When police got to the scene, Greasly had to be dragged into the police car.

Now he has an anxious wait to find out his fate as his case was adjourned for a report from the probation service.

'You're a f****** taxi driver'

Lynn Bickley, prosecuting, said the taxi driver had worked in Derby for 14 years. He came from Afghanistan for a better life and has been a British citizen for 11 years.

She said: "He picked up a passenger outside a city centre bar. The male had to be put in his car by others. He was placed in the back seat and asked to take him to Mackworth.

"The male was this defendant and was quiet until they got to Prince Charles Avenue when he asked him for the address.

"He said 'you're a f****** taxi driver, you should know where you are going.'"

Locked in the taxi

The court heard that the driver then asked for his post code, but got the same response.

Ms Bickley said the driver called the office and Greasly got into the front seat.

She said: "He used racist language towards the taxi driver and told him to keep going.

"The driver manages to get out the car and locks the defendant inside.

The court heard how when police arrived, officers had to drag him into the police car.

He told officers he wasn't racist

During his interview he said he couldn't remember anything.

He told officers he wasn't racist and he apologised during his interview.

Asif Munir, mitigating, asked for the case to be adjourned for the probation service to make a report on Greasly and that he should be given unconditional bail.

Greasly, of Endsleigh Gardens, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated common assault.

The chair of the bench said: "We need to know more about you. Before you leave today if you talk to probation service a report will be prepared.

"In the mean time you will be given unconditional bail."

He will next appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court later this month.

Oddly, the piece doesn't otherwise mention any physical assault :-s

You can be found guilty of an assault, without the defendant actually touching the victim.

Fear of an assault is enough.

Pleading guilty to a racially aggravated offence means you are a racist.
