Repeat offender jailed for axe attack has taxi licence bid rejected

Newcastle City Council fear the dad-of-three's past makes him unsuitable to drive strangers around

A thug jailed for a bloody axe attack has had a bid to become a taxi driver dismissed despite claiming he's "found religion".

Imran Akram, of Tamworth Road, Fenham, insists he's changed after a past steeped in drugs, crime and violence but that wasn't enough to convince a panel at Newcastle Magistrates' Court to grant him a licence.

The three-person panel ruled Akram, released from jail in 2017, hadn't been out of trouble for long enough to grant him a licence.

The court heard he committed weapons offences in 2011 and 2015, a caution for possession of class B in 2012, conspiracy to supply in 2017 and police had spotted a car - insured in his name - being used to deal drugs just last summer.

There was also another act of violence, simply refereed to as the "baseball bat incident", against his name.

But he claimed the axe attack - which left his victim needing stitches - was carried out in the "heat of the moment".

"I've changed my lifestyle and want to be a father to my kids," claimed the dad-of-three.

Newcastle City Council previously refused his application at a behind-closed-doors meeting, but the 25-year-old's bid was refused.

Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard fears heavily convicted Akram couldn't be trusted with the safety of strangers.

"I'm a changed man," he told the hearing.

"I was just a child at the time."

During his time in prison he said he took a personal training course and dropped from 17st to 11st as well as undertaking a college course which will see him start a two-week placement with British Gas.

It heard how he was locked up at 17st but, having taken a personal training course inside, had lost six stone.

He told the panel he had found his Muslim faith and hoped to drive a taxi until he could embark on a new career.

But council solicitor Louise Coulson stated if he did get the job, there was a strong chance he'd run into a hostile situation at some point.

"How would you ensure you didn't act in the heat of the moment again," she asked.

But the magistrates' ruling means - for now - he won't have the chance.

Magistrates told him: "We do not think you are a fit and proper person."

So only wants to drive cabs until he finds a 'proper job'

Wouldn't he be better concentrating on his supposed 'new career' rather than appealing to the magistrates' court for a badge etc?

It might be easier getting a job delivering pizzas in the meantime :?

What kind of a crazy minded thought process leads someone to believe they can drive a taxi/PH after only a couple of years out of jail?

I suspect the fella is still on license FFS.
