This was the moment a "terrified" Boro Taxis passenger filmed a driver casually scrolling through Facebook on his phone while at the wheel.

Ashleigh McNamara, 27, said she suffers from terrible anxiety and was petrified as the incident unfolded.

The residential care worker had been picked up from The Swatters Carr pub, on Linthorpe Road, and was heading to her Eston home, when she clocked the driver on his mobile.

She told Teesside Live: "Driving down towards Skippers Lane, I noticed he was on his phone.

"I thought he was sorting out another fare, I saw he was on Facebook, he was scrolling through and liking pictures and videos.

"I started videoing it, I didn't dare say anything, I was afraid he would stop and kick me out of the taxi.

"It terrifies me, I hate people who use their phone when they are driving, there's no need."

The 40-second footage shows the self-employed driver brazenly scrolling with his index finger, as he appears to repeatedly take his eyes off the road.

The incident unfolded last Sunday, July 14, at around 9.20pm.

The shocking footage has been viewed almost 45,000 times online.

Ashleigh added: "I think it's disgusting, it's unnecessary, irresponsible.

"Please, anyone who thinks of using their phone, think about your family member who could be walking in the middle of the road."

Boro Taxis says that Stockton Council has taken the driver "off the road".

A spokeswoman for the company said: “We are pleased that Stockton Council has acted swiftly to put this self-employed driver off the road, because it is wholly unacceptable for drivers to be using social media apps whilst driving."

Clearly a very stupid thing to do, but by itself is that really enough to suspend or revoke a license?

Is it not a police matter?

Maybe not if it was a one off, but I reckon he does it all the time.

It may be in their policy and a condition of license.

that might have been a major factor council needs to be seen to be upholding standards

40-second footage emerged showing a taxi driver scrolling on his mobile while carrying a passenger in July

A taxi driver who was caught scrolling through Facebook at the wheel has had his licence revoked.

Stockton Council’s licensing committee deemed the former Boro Taxis driver was not a “fit and proper person” to drive a cab after 40-second footage showed him scrolling on his mobile while carrying a passenger in July.

Care worker Ashleigh McNamara said she was terrified when she clocked the driver on the app after being picked up from The Swatters Carr Pub, on Linthorpe Road .

Her video has been viewed more than 45,000 times online.

The committee meeting was held behind closed doors in August but minutes for the panel revealed the driver was remorseful and explained it would never happen again if he was allowed to keep his licence.

However, councillors found the driver was “not paying adequate attention” - citing the fact he hadn’t noticed his rear passenger was recording his actions.

The committee also found the driver “had not been wholly truthful” when interviewed by a council licensing officer and found his explanation that he was “expecting a message from his wife” to be false.

On the back of the evidence, members agreed to revoke his licence.

A spokeswoman for the company said: “We are pleased that Stockton Council has acted swiftly to put this self-employed driver off the road because it is wholly unacceptable for drivers to be using social media apps whilst driving."

Using a hand-held phone while driving is against the law and can land motorists with six penalty points and a £200 fine.

After the meeting, Ms McNamara welcomed the decision and hoped it would be a warning to others who thought about using their phone behind the wheel.

The 27-year-old added: “If it stops others, whether they are driving taxis or just normal drivers, it can only be a good thing.

“It’s just not worth it.”

Is this the same Boro Taxis that in the past refused to transport disabled punters as it wasn't viable?

Is this the same Boro Taxis that use licensed drivers and vehicles from Wolverhampton 172 miles away?
