A crack cocaine addict conned taxi drivers out of money 'for his children' before fleeing without paying his fares.

Christopher Stuart played the sympathy card on eight separate journeys predominantly around the Newcastle and North Tyneside areas.

The 29-year-old pulled on the heartstrings of taxi drivers 'for his children' and persuaded them to part with up to £20 at a time.

Stuart then made off at the end of each journey without payment, racking up theft and making off without payment debts of almost £400 in a matter of days.

Now Stuart, of Turbinia Gardens, High Heaton, has been locked up and banned from booking taxis after appearing at Newcastle Crown Court.

Prosecutor Vincent Ward outlined how Stuart's offending began on May 26 with an afternoon fare to Martello Gardens in Heaton.

Mr Ward said: "The defendant has booked taxis on different dates and at times.

"During the journeys, he's persuaded the driver to loan him money for his children, and has left without paying his taxi at the end of the journey."

The taxi driver lost out on a fare of £10.70 after being sweet talked into handing over £20 for Stuart's family, and the pattern repeated itself seven more times over the following week. One driver was left £90 out of pocket following a journey to the Coast Road on May 31.

Mr Ward finished: "The taxi driver community in the city needs to be protected from this sort of behaviour."

Stuart pleaded guilty to eight counts of theft from a person and eight counts of making off without payment, and appeared via video link for sentencing on Thursday.

The court heard how Stuart, who has 29 previous convictions from 103 offences, succumbed to his drug addiction despite a court-imposed rehabilitation order last summer.

Andrew Walker, mitigating, outlined how missed appointments due to a support worker's long-term illness and the failure to secure a placement at a residential clinic scuppered the 29-year-old's attempts to engage with rehabilitation services.

Mr Walker said: "It was not very long after that drugs took hold, he started offending and everything went downhill.

"Crack cocaine is a drug that currently he is in a vice-like grip of.

"He is an individual with potential. He knows he needs assistance."

Judge Robert Spragg sentenced Stuart to 10 months' imprisonment, and told the court it was clear Stuart's offending stemmed from his crack cocaine addiction.

Stuart has also been banned from booking a taxi in the areas of Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, and South Tyneside for three years.
