Man jailed for using fake money has licences suspended

A PRIVATE hire company owner who was jailed for using counterfeit money in Oban has had his licences suspended.

Eight private hire car licences under Tahir Nadeem’s name and one under Pacific Cars, as well as Pacific Cars’ booking office licence, have been revoked by Glasgow’s licensing chiefs.

The move followed a recommendation from Police Scotland, with an officer reporting Mr Nadeem was deemed a “serious threat to public safety” and could no longer be seen as a fit and proper person. He was charged with using a fraudulent £20 note in an Oban newsagent, using fake £2 coins in another newsagents and having counterfeit £2 coins in his car. All the incidents occurred in June this year.

When shopkeepers raised suspicions with police over the money, CCTV footage was used to identify Mr Nadeem and his car registration. He was spotted by officers while driving out of Oban on June 15 and jailed for 12 months after a trial.

The licensing committee decided to suspend Mr Nadeem’s licences for the unexpired portion of their duration.

Can't see how on the facts reported the licence holder can be a "serious threat to public safety".

And, while I don't normally pay attention to stuff like this, didn't think you'd get 12 months in jail for this kind of thing, at least on the facts reported

He would have to have been deemed to be a central figure in the fake currency scheme to get that sentence, or more than just a one/two off courier.

Suspect there is more to it, and maybe he was charged with other offences.

Clearly the police are using their powers in terms of getting the iffy folks out of the trade.

Maybe others in the trade are looking over their shoulders a little bit more than they have in the past.

Glas­gow taxi driver jailed over fake money

A taxi com­pany owner found guilty of us­ing coun­ter­feit money in Oban has been jailed for 12 months.

Oban sher­iff Patrick Hughes told Tahir Nadeem it was ‘an at­tack on the eco­nomic life of the coun­try’ and one that busi­nesses, par­tic­u­larly in ru­ral ar­eas, could do without.

Nadeem, of Flat 1-1 Ken­more Street, Glas­gow, who also drives his taxis, was found guilty af­ter a trial on May 20 but his sen­tenc­ing was de­ferred un­til last week for re­ports and a re­stric­tion of liberty or­der.

The 32-year-old was charged with us­ing a fraud­u­lent £20 note in an Oban newsagents on June 3; us­ing fake £2 coins in an­other newsagents on June 9; and hav­ing coun­ter­feit £2 coins in his car, as well as a scalpel without a rea­son­able ex­cuse on June 15 last year.

A pre­vi­ous court hear­ing was told Nadeem used the coun­ter­feit money without know­ing it was fake. In re­gards to the scalpel, Nadeem said he found it in the back of his car.

The first shop­keeper ac­cepted the £20 note, but said that ‘it didn’t feel right’. The note was kept aside and later passed to the man­ager, who took it to the po­lice the fol­low­ing morn­ing.

The sec­ond on June 9 was given five £2 coins and also ac­cepted them, but when an­other cus­tomer paid with a £2 coin, the shop­keeper noted a dif­fer­ence.

The coins looked new, but the date was not and the fea­tures were not as defined. The coins also failed to have ‘stand­ing on the shoul­ders of giants’ etched on the side.

The money was taken to the po­lice, who used CCTV footage to iden­tify the man, us­ing his car reg­is­tra­tion.

By chance on June 15, po­lice spot­ted the ve­hi­cle driv­ing on the A85 out of Oban.

They caught up with Nadeem in Con­nel, placed him un­der ar­rest and searched his ve­hi­cle, un­earthing more fake £2 coins and a scalpel.

Nadeem had claimed the £30 in coins that were found in the car might have been left by an­other driver.

It was the scalpel that did it.

A lesson to us all.

public safety doesn't just mean physical safety it means in the wider sense of safety form being scammed or overcharged or taken advantage of or abused

Probably, and that maybe explains the 'public safety' aspect.

But strange that the Evening Times report on the committee hearing didn't mention the scalpel, since it would have presumably been mentioned in the Police Scotland evidence.

And the report of the trial in the Oban Times emphasises the fake money dimension as well.

But I suppose the fake cash angle resonates a bit more with the public as well, so it provided the newspaper headline, and the unexplained scalpel wasn't mentioned.

Or maybe the Evening Times reporter just forgot to mention the scalpel
