The driver went to Saxelby Close in Druids Heath to pick up a passenger at around 11pm on Saturday, August 24.
A man got into the vehicle and then stabbed the driver several times, before fleeing with cash and his mobile phone.
The victim, aged in his 40s, was taken to hospital with serious hand injuries.
Detective Sergeant Adam Marshall, from Force CID , said: "This was a savage attack on a man who was going about his line of work.
"He was lured to the street and stabbed; leaving him with potentially life-changing hand injuries.
"Enquiries around the call and attacker are being carried out and I would urge anybody with information which can help us to get in touch.”
