Racist Mansfield man punched taxi driver afer spilling food in his cab

A Mansfield man hurled racist abuse and punched a taxi driver after spilling takeaway food in the back of his cab, a court has heard.

Ian Rigley was drunk when he hailed the taxi on Leeming Street, with his partner, on July 23, last year, said prosecutor Andrew Conboy.

He was warned not to eat the takeaway food he had brought, but at some stage the 36-year-old spilled some of it on the back seat.

Stopping outside the One Stop store on Westfield Lane, the driver told him there was a £60 soiling charge.

Rigley tried to wipe the mess up with tissues, but when the driver told him it needed soap and water, he threatened ‘to knock his teeth out of his face.’

He loomed over the driver and forced him into a crouching position, before punching him in the back of his head.

A member of staff from the shop tried to intervene and overheard Rigley using more racist insults.

Mr Conboy asked for £300 towards the total £620 cost of preparing the case for a trial.

The court heard the defendant was jailed for 180 days in 2008 for a racially-aggravated assault, and there had been a 'recent spate of offending.'

Abbie Edwards, mitigating, said: "There is no excuse for his behaviour."

But she said there was a large gap in his offending between 2014 and last year, when ‘he managed to sort his life out’ by finding work.

Rigley lost his job as a builder's labourer during the pandemic, Ms Edwards said, and his long-term partner suffered a miscarriage.

"The couple turned to alcohol to mask their pain," she said. “Since 2014 he has been able to show the court that he doesn’t want to go down that road.”

Rigley, of Queensway, Forest Town, initially denied racially aggravated harassment and racially aggravated assault when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on February 8, this year. He changed his pleas to guilty before a trial on Friday.

Magistrates adjourned the case so a probation report can be prepared, and the possibility of an alcohol treatment order explored, before he is sentenced on June 9.

Indeed, depends what it is, where it goes and how much of it there is. I've had plenty vomits that have been relatively easy to clean up, and as long as it's localised, and if it's on mats, door sills or plastic stuff, might only take a couple of minutes.

On the other hand, a takeaway on light coloured cloth or velour seats, say, could leave staining that wouldn't be easy to remove.

And I'll always remember this boy racer type, who I fell out with over parking on the rank. He came back round with a takeaway, and tried to throw it in my open window. Fortunately he missed

But it was my brand new Passat, and just a few weeks old. Image the mess it would have made of the dashboard etc if his aim was a bit better. There would have been bits everywhere, and almost impossible to clean properly, for example stuff in air vents :x

Also remember this student one night who puked through tje open front passenger window, but some of it went inside the door, some outside, and some into the door panel :-&

Even several years later there's a slight smearing left on the window when it's wound down. Door would really need to be dismantled to clean it properly ](*,)

I'd probably avoid using that window completely, but folk are always tapping on it asking if I'll take them to [wherever]. I wouldn't mind, but the people who do that are either going 50 miles or so, or 500 yards or so, but it's usually the latter

Mansfield alcoholic told to tackle boozing after racist assault on taxi driver

https://www.chad.co.uk/news/crime/mansf ... er-3726676

A Mansfield alcoholic who hurled racist abuse and punched a taxi driver after spilling takeaway food in the back of his cab has been ordered to clean up his act.

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court heard Ian Rigley was drunk when he hailed the taxi on Leeming Street, on July 23, last year.

Rebecca Williams, prosecuting, said Rigley was warned not to eat the takeaway food he brought, but at some stage the 36-year-old spilled some of it on the back seat.

Stopping at the One Stop store on Westfield Lane, the driver told him there was a £60 soiling charge.

Rigley tried to wipe the mess up with tissues, but when the driver told him it needed soap and water, he threatened to knock his ‘black teeth out of his face’.

He loomed over the driver and forced him into a crouching position, before punching him in the back of his head.

A member of staff from the shop tried to intervene and overheard Rigley using more racist insults.

His victim said the pain in the back of his head was ‘thrashing’ as he continued to work, and it lasted until the next day, but he did not need medical treatment.

The court heard Rigley was jailed for 180 days for a racially-aggravated assault, in 2008.

Rigley, of Queensway, Forest Town, initially denied racially aggravated harassment and assault, but pleaded guilty on the day of his trial.

Donna Pursglove, mitigating, said Rigley has previous convictions for ‘different types of offences’, but there was a gap in his offending between 2014 and 2021.

She said he has a ‘very significant alcohol problem’ and ‘most of his offending was committed while he was intoxicated’.

She said Rigley stopped drinking to excess while working full-time, but lost his job in lockdown.

“He coped with that by drinking to excess, and on occasions until he passed out,” she said. “He accepts that he is an alcoholic and needs some help. He knows if he doesn't stop he will end up in prison.”

He was handed a 12-month community order, with a six-month alcohol treatment programme and five rehabilitation days, and ordered to pay £100 compensation, £200 costs and a £95 surcharge.
