It's déjà vu all over again, as someone once said.

Dangerous faults found in yellow cabs checked in Derby city centre

Some drivers had their licences suspended

Yellow cabs checked in Derby city centre yesterday were all found to have serious faults.

Six out of six taxis tested by police and council officers had defects resulting in immediate prohibitions and licence suspensions.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit say they pressed the brake pedal on the first taxi they checked and the brake pipe burst.

The driver was given a prohibition and had their taxi licence suspended.

The second taxi had leaking fluids and a faulty side door that wouldn't stay open. The passenger floor area was damaged and had trip hazards. The driver had their taxi licence suspended.

Taxi three had corrosion all around the rear seat mountings. Officers said they could even see straight through to the road in some places. The constant-velocity gaiter had split.

The driver was given an immediate prohibition and had their taxi licence suspended.

The clutch was not releasing properly on taxi number four and the ignition switch was faulty and liable to turn off at random.

The driver had their taxi licence suspended.

Taxi number five had a faulty steering rack and an unidentified knocking sound. The flooring had trip hazards making it unsuitable for paying passengers. The driver had his taxi licence suspended.

Taxi six had excessive exhaust smoke and faulty seats. The driver had their taxi licence suspended.

seem to think this is a recurring theme with Derby taxis

but suspect that these 6 were targeted possibly following previous stop exercises as vehicles previously found to be faulty

Dunno, would be easier to pull such vehicles in for a test rather than rely on finding them on the streets among the hundreds of others.

My money would be on them targeting the very oldest ones, or those which otherwise draw attention. I mean, check out the exhaust smoke on the video below:

Or maybe they're all just a pile of junk, and for the police and council it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

According to the RPU's Twitter feed, reason they only checked six is because of the time involved in prohibitions and suspensions etc.

A few more photos from the RPU's Twitter feed. Unfortunately the registration plates are obscured, so difficult to tell precise age.

Be very surprised if this wasn't the case.

Else there is no reason for them not checking every other cab in the next week or so, if the evidence we currently have is that 100% of Derby's cabs are unsafe.
