Wav only business but is it licensed

Driving Miss Daisy empowers people to live more independent lives through specialist transport and the chance to meet people face to face.

Barney Buik, an entrepreneur, was keen to run a business that provided a safe, caring service that supported people’s independence and their ability to live life and stay connected to their community.

So far he has been extremely pleased with the level of interest, which has exceeded his expectations.

Barney said: “We cover quite a large rural area, with the towns of Grantham, Bourne, Stamford, Uppingham and Oakham, and the rural transport can be quite restrictive so we have been able to assist a large number of clients both in these towns and the surrounding villages."

He added: "We are not a taxi company. We offer far more than that with our 'companion drivers' and wheelchair accessible vehicles.

"Many of our clients have become not just regulars but friends. We undertake regular shopping trips, which allow our clients to not only shop 'offline' but also enabling them to get out, interact and socialise with other people.

“We also assist with trips to hospital or the doctor, often taking notes for family members who cannot be there.”

Enabling people to enjoy social outings and have fun is another aspect of the service provided by Barney and his team.

He said: “A 92-year-old client of ours, a wheelchair user, wanted to go for a shopping trip and lunch in Peterborough to meet up with three friends. She returned home tired, but with a wonderful smile having had a great day!

“An up and coming trip we are really excited about is taking another client to one of the first showings of the Downton Abbey film - she's a huge fan.”

Barney said, “Our motto is‘We’re family when family can’t be there’, and that is exactly who we are – providing a trusted, reliable service to clients and supporting their friends and family.”

Knowing how price conscious people are round here and how cheap the volunteer sector is. I am surprised this has "taken off". I have seen the vehicle about but not seen a plate on it :-k

So my question is is this a taxi service or not because they seem to think they have found a great way to earn money by charging for the same service the volunteer sector provides cheap and have obviously spent a few quid on the vehicle and branding

I don't do Wav any more so I really can't be bothered not exactly a threat to my business but I'm just surprised that they can compete with the volunteer sector

It's a national franchise. By the looks of their website it's a surprise that nobody on here seems to have heard of it before, but looks like it was started in New Zealand/Canada, and now across here, and suspect it has less reach in the UK than portrayed on the website. But, of course, that's often how new businesses do these things - try to look big and well-established to attract new clients, then it snowballs...

But obviously a shedload of money invested in this, and there's a ton of promotional stuff on their website about the process of getting a franchise, marketing etc.

And it takes the advertorial stuff to a new level - on the homepage there's a video of what's supposed to look like a TV news report, but it's basically an advert masquerading as something newsworthy.

It's a big site, but a couple of the photos show vehicles with 'pre-booked only' on the side, so suspect they're plated PHVs.

The process of being selected looks long and onerous, and there's tons of stuff on the website, but buried deep in there there's mention of local authority licensing processes, or similar, so that's presumably the PHV bit.

But by the looks of it and the very long selection and training process, or whatever, I suspect in the grand scheme of things getting plated would be small beer for any prospective franchisee.

It might be one of those Community Transport oufits who run minibuses on s19 permits and do licenced PSV operators out of business.

It would be interesting to see if they charge more than a metered fore for particular journeys as this would be discriminating against disabled people. but then I suppose being PH plated they can get away with it.

actually that is the loading and unloading point for the George as it is the only bit which isn't full of parked cars you can stop without blocking the (private) road
