A lot of these spot-check stories aren't really worth bothering about, so don't normally post them all. But interesting here that the headline may look bad to locals reading it, but as regards these things nationally a better summary might have been along the lines of 'Only one of 18 vehicles spot-checked was suspended'.

Interesting and unusual problem, though - brake lights had 'insufficient illumination' - wonder what that was all about? The car's other 'serious defects' - broken coil spring and insecure exhaust - are pretty bog standard, though.


Bromsgrove taxi driver's licence suspended for 'serious safety defects'

'SERIOUS safety defects' on a taxi's brake lights and exhaust have led to a Bromsgrove cabbie's licence being suspended.

The discovery was made last Friday (October 18) when officers from Worcestershire Regulatory Services (WRS) selected passing private hire vehicles and taxis for the inspections.

The vehicles were redirected to Bromsgrove District Council’s nominated testing stations for a safety check.

Of the 18 vehicles checked, one was identified as not being satisfactory and its licence was subsequently suspended on safety grounds.

The private hire vehicle's brake lights had insufficient illumination, while other issues included a broken suspension coil spring and an unsecured exhaust.

Bromsgrove District Councillor Helen Jones, who is chairman of the Licensing Committee and sits on the WRS Board, said: “We want the passengers in our district’s taxis and private hire vehicles to be confident that they are safe during their journey.

“I am delighted that all but one of these taxis and drivers, chosen at random, were compliant and that action is being taken to make sure that our residents and visitors will not be riding in an unsafe vehicle."

many cars can run for hundreds of miles with a broken coil it just means it's in 2 bits but still works

Well indeed, and I suspect 2.5 micrograms of cannabis doesn't represent much in the way of impairment or danger either, compared to 120 micrograms or so after smoking *one* joint.

And unless you check your coil springs every day (who does that?) then could easily drive for a good time without knowing it's broken.

And if there's 30 million cars in the UK, no doubt there are thousands driving around with broken coils springs at any one time, and without incident or penalty to the car owner.

Suspect much the same with low levels of cannabis, which would show as slightly over the limit in a blood test, but drivers will never show any signs of impairment, so unlikely to be subject to a blood test.
