TAXI fares in Blackburn with Darwen could be set to rise for the first time in eight years.
Blackburn with Darwen Council has received an application from the Hackney Carriage trade for an increase in hackney carriage fares.
Increases in fares are only triggered by requests made from the trade. The last increase was in 2011.
If council bosses back the scheme, a public consultation will take place.
Currently Blackburn with Darwen’s fares rank 344 out of 358 listed authorities, nationally.
If the increase goes ahead, the borough will have the highest Hackney Carriage fares in East Lancashire.
For a two mile journey fares across the country range from £4.20 to £10.60, with Blackburn at £4.70.
If the increase is approved, Blackburn with Darwen would still be in the lowest quartile of the national table with a two mile fare costing £5.40
Pendle and Burnley have the lowest fares in East Lancashire with a two-mile journey costing £4.40 and £4.50 respectively.
Hyndburn currently has the same rate as Blackburn with Darwen at £4.70.
Fares in Rossendale are currently set at £5 for a two mile journey.
And Ribble Valley has the highest fares in East Lancashire with a two-mile journey costing passengers £5.30.
Nationally, London Heathrow has the highest fare over two miles at £10.60 followed by Luton Airport at £9.20 and Watford at £8.40.
The highest fare in the north west can be found in Chester, where a two-mile journey costs £6.70.
Blackburn with Darwen Council principal licensing officer, Donna Riding, said: “The trade have borne the increases in fuel prices and overheads since 2011.
“In balancing the increase fare per mile of journey the trade have suggested that additional costs for luggage and additional passengers will be removed.
“The use of calanderised meters would be the only way to ensure the correct fare tariff is used at different times of day and night.
“Some hackney vehicle proprietors will need to upgrade to this type of meter to ensure compliance.
“The application for increase in hackney carriage fares is a policy matter that should be considered by the executive member.
“The expertise of the licensing committee in this area of work is recognised.
“The licensing committee need to consider the fare increase, and if supported will need to recommend the request being advertised.”
