'Immediate threat to the public' – Stoke-on-Trent cabbie banned after driving wrong way down one-way street

https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/news/st ... ke-3508675

He was also barred from picking up children

A cabbie who was caught on camera driving the wrong way down a one-way street has lost his licence.

The private hire and Hackney carriage licence holder also refused to explain why he had been placed on a list barring him from picking up children after failing a DBS check.

His excuse for incorrectly driving down the one-way street was that 'other licensed drivers did it too'.

The driver's name has not been revealed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council as meetings are held in secret.

The licence holder was also six months into a twelve-month licence after a previous licensing appeal was dealt with at the crown court.

A complaint was received by the authority on October 8 and was considered by the licensing panel, who were concerned the driver had tried to tone down the serious nature of the allegations by claiming the evidence was all hearsay.

The panel felt there were inconsistencies in the licence holder’s account of the evening and noted he had been observed on CCTV footage parking and lingering in prohibited areas in contravention of Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy 2016-2019.

Council licensing bosses also noted the taxi driver had previously received four separate warnings for parking and/or lingering in prohibited areas.

In addition, the he was unable to confirm to the panel the reasons why he had been placed on the DBS's Children’s Barred List and went on to attribute this to a previous allegation made against him.

As such the panel members considered they would not feel comfortable getting into a taxi alone with the driver and revoked his licence with immediate effect as they considered he could be a danger and immediate threat to the public.

Councillor Ally Simcock, chair of the licensing and registration panel at Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "Our principal concern is always the safety of passengers.

"Taxi and private hire drivers are in a position of responsibility and trust, and we take our duty to protect the public extremely seriously.

"In the interests of public safety the taxi and private hire driver’s licence was revoked with immediate effect. We will always act quickly to remove any driver who is deemed to be a risk to the public."

#-o #-o #-o

The correct response should be I made a mistake and couldn't see anywhere to turn round

what an idiot sounds like it was just as well he lost his license

I must say though that amongst the locals the taxi drivers do have a bad name for poor driving well according to my relatives they do

If he is on that list he can't be a taxi/PH driver anyway.

Yes, did wonder about that.

But portraying the thing in the way the committee did probably suits their political purpose more than protecting the public =D>
