Quote: Ah, I see, it's not about how many drivers are working in the area, it's making sure they work for local firms rather than Uber. Which may matter to the proprietors of the firms, but makes no difference to the drivers. That's the case down here. Most of the fuss isn't about the work being lost to local drivers, it's about the loss of drivers to local firms. |

Most of the fuss isn't about the work being lost to local drivers, it's about the loss of drivers to local firms. This is the full statement - according to their Facebook page they're representing HC and PHV drivers, but this makes it sound more like a proprietors/operators organisation: Thurrock Taxi Drivers Association wrote: We have had messages from Uber drivers working in Thurrock who are not happy with our statement. They claim 45,000 people could potentially be put out of work. Our answer to this is that there are plenty of cab firms in Thurrock wanting to hire drivers from all backgrounds. If you wish to continue to work in Thurrock please get in touch with your local Thurrock cab office where they will be more than happy to help you obtain a licence to work in Thurrock and for a local legal cab firm. For what it's worth, just a day or two after that and the Uber announcement, the chairman announced he was stepping down, apparently after building up the organisation over a year-and-a-half. I suppose it's reasonable enough to surmise that he's just had enough of the whole thing. Funny, though, that he announced this just a couple of days after the supposedly good news on the Uber front. So maybe something's come to light that's not evident from the statement: TTDA chairman wrote: Hi,
Over the past year and a half I have managed to build the TTDA up and help raise attention to the problem of app based firms within our area. I have fought with everything I have for this cause but now feel it is time to step aside and let someone else become chairman and lead with fresh passion. Therefore effective immediately I am stepping down as chairman of the TTDA and am now looking for volunteers willing to take over. I want to thank everyone for your support and wish my successor a world of luck and support. Kind Regards, Ian |

Defo a case of 'I've had a gut-full'. You have got to have an attitude of not giving a monkeys what folks thing of you to be a good association head. And of course knowing a bit about the law helps. |
