Rules?

Fascism more like.

Isn't it amazing that, despite the lessons of Adolf Hitler, the yolk of fascist control was accepted so meekly?

Let me just say now. Were uncle Adolf to march into Edinburgh today, I would be perplexed whether to resist.

I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

My defence would begin and end at my front door. Screw everyone else.

As The Clash sung about 25 years ago:

"If Adolf Hitler flew in today,
They'd send a limousine anyway."

Of course, it would be an American stretch limo these days. :)

"I'm so bored with the USA!!!"

im surprised there wasn,t a lot of replys to this post, 107 views? remeber it will be coming to an area near you, maybe all the cabbies down south can part with the fifty bucks (thirty if paid within three weeks) without batting an eyelid, there has been a lot more caught over the last week, the police not the enviroment officers have been doing the deeds , the first one was caught at 4.00 am just as he was finnishing his shift , allegedly a private hire, incidently nobody in any pubs or clubs have flouted the law just shows you , keep an eye on those cabbies

I'm surprised that the pubs seem to be complying with the law, or at least thats what we''re led to believe.

I know there are a few taxi drivers here who are ignoring it, or at least think that opening a window and having a fag out of it meansthey are complying with the law. And few of the taxis have the no-smoking stickers, and I believe its an offence not to display them.

I'm also surprised to here that the police have been taking an interest, since I thought they were supposed to be only their for back up and had no power to enforce it? And since they can't even do their own job it seems a bit off to waste time on this. I took someone to Fatty's on Sunday and parts of the city centre had been closed off, I believe it's because the polis can't control the neds and numpties wandering about in the middle of the street?

fatties is closed off because it,s the main nightclub and its situated in a very small street, the kebab shop round the corner is also the main one, at closing time you had massive crowds, plus the million or so taxis blocking the street, crushed toes and even worse kicked cab doors were the norm, the no smoking stickers have to be displayed complete with the ops signature, failure to comply is a £200 fine, thats maybe okay for some of the english cabbies who have ignrored my post, but north of the border
it,s a lot of money, as for the police whats easiest tackling drunks/druggies or a smoking cabbie ?

To be honest I'm a supporter of the smoking ban, and knowing several people who have died of lung cancer look forward to a time when I don't know several people dying of it.

Not really too sure yet. I was off a few days earlier in the month when I got another car, then the students were away then came back, so with St Andrews so dependent on students it's difficult to tell what difference the ban has made. Then it was Easter last weekend and it was pretty crap on Friday and Saturday, so difficult to tell again if it was due to the ban or Easter.

But I read in the papers that some pubs were actually taking more?

But you get more people coming into the taxi stinking of smoke, because the have a fag or two after coming out of the pub then get a taxi, so I would say my car smells more of fags than before

i have talked to bar managers and they say there takings are up. one chap said it was up about 15% but its still early days we will have to wait and see what happens over the next few months.

all TAXI/PH in edinburgh have to have "no smoking logos" on them.
so you are unable to smoke in you motor regardless if you are working or not. cant say i have seen the town any less busy than b4 the ban.

there will soon be a clamp down on TAXI/PH that dont have them in the next few wks so i have been told

iam a smoker and i welcome the ban iam now thinking of giving up.

If tony blair is that worried about my health as a smoker, and non smoker's health through passive smoking, then he should have the courage to ban smoking completeley!!

But we know he won't because he like's the money!!

Well given the doom-mongering that was coming from the licensed trade in the run up to the ban, it's another timely example of how the message emanating from business can't always be trusted.

Of course, if the profit increase isn't just a short term phenomenom, then the difference here is that the pub trade weren't just trying to delude the public, but were deluding themselves as well.

The smoking ban does not seem to be having any affect down here in the Borders, thats in Scotland for those who live south of the Watford gap  the only place that is moaning is the bingo hall, as everyone goes outside at half time and he loosing money on the table top bingo,
he has tried to change the session but 100 pensioners missed there buses home last busses at 925pm except for city ones.
Drivers still smoke in there cabs when coming back to the rank from runs out in the sticks
I stopped 4 weeks ago after 36 years was on 60 a day went to the smoking clinic and got free patches, its hard but I'm determined and its getting easyer as time goes by
