This is a classic example of 'churnalism' - simply rehashing/rearranging an official press release. Or, these days in particular, doing likewise with stuff from social media - this one's from the Birmingham Police Facebook page.

Which is all very well, but in this case the article basically repeats the Facebook twice, as will be evident from reading it. And the word 'the' is repeated in consecutive paragraphs :?

Think that's the norm nowadays.

Local journalists never seem to get out of their offices and live on press releases and traffic updates, and of course loads of moaney old gits writing emails of complaint.

Indeed. But problem is that *newspaper* sales have been decimated, likewise advertising revenues from that source. Most of their websites can't justify charging for access, and I suspect the online advertising market is very competitive.

And they're competing against online-only news sites (which don't have the same overheads) and other sources of news.

So it's a vicious circle of declining resources and a more competitive marketplace, hence the less resource-intensive 'churnalism' as a result.
