Useful enough exercise for the fare-paying public, in principle at least. But not sure how the following can be used to compare firms if only tonight's *premiums* are outlined, and there's little or no info about the basic tariffs - how do you know if a fixed £2 (say) is better than 50% (say) if you don't know the basic fare in the first place? And even if all the necessary info was provided, it's about as useful as showing people half a dozen tariff cards and asking them to say which one is cheapest - a lengthy statistical analysis, assuming the reader was capable of doing such an exercise in the first place. Admit it, we've all been there The secret to securing your chariot home is of course booking in advance - although taxi fares cost more on New Year's Eve. However, if you are capable of that amount of foresight (I know I'm not), then you may find it isn't that bad. We asked some of the major Tyneside taxi firms what they were charging extra on New Year's Eve. And some confirmed they were increasing fares by as little as £2-a-trip. That offer was with Blueline, which will put the surplus on every fare - regardless of distance of time. Other operators said the increase all depended on the time. One of those, Newcastle Taxis, said it will operate a fare-and-a-half rate until midnight, after which it will be double fare. One of the biggest firms on Tyneside, LA, confirmed it was operating at a fare-and-a-half rate all night whatever the time, while Budget is running a special New Year tarif. The pricing mirrors the rate paid at Christmas and will be in place from 6pm until 7am, with aa minimum fare of £5 with a rate of £1.80-a-mile after. And Dean Taxis, which operates out of Gateshead, said it was also implmenting a mileage-based system. A staff member told ChroncileLive that it will charge around an extra 60-80p per mile on all trips. |

And some people wonder why drivers won't work late at night, or drive past flaggers?
