Pretty, er, formulaic fare rise article - some want a rise to cover costs, others don't because of PH and Uber, blah, blah.

But couple of interesting nuggets at the end.

Taxi fares could rise in the Royal Borough as drivers argue that they cannot live on the current rates.

Passengers who use the borough's licensed Hackney Carriage may see a 10 percent or a 20 percent rise in prices - which for a two-mile journey could raise to £6.38 or £6.96. The current cost is £5.80.

Drivers argue the increase is necessary because many of them are struggling to make a reasonable living unless they work unacceptable hours as the price of living and fuel has gone up over the years.

But on officers' report to councillors will say that this view is not unanimous, as one driver has expressed fears that increased fares would see private hire contractors like Uber benefit at the expense of the Royal Borough's traditional Hackney carriages

Councillors are expected to make a decision about whether to allow the increase at next Monday's meeting of the Royal Borough's licensing panel.

They are being recommended by their officers to scrap the extra 20p charge for two or more passengers, introducing instead a flat fee for of £1 for carrying four or more people.

The officers' report also draws attention to the fact that some drivers have not been adhering to the mandatory requirement that they use their meters. The report will recommend that the tariff card displayed in the vehicle should contain the information that meters need to be used so that customers are aware.

I'm assuming the 20p is per each additional passenger?

And you'd have thought the £1 flat fee would be for *more* than four people rather than four *or* more?

Which would be consistent with the normal practice for vehicles bigger than the standard four seats.

But I'm assuming there's no current flat premium for larger vehicles, so a flat £1 seems quite modest. But certainly more than the £0 in Fife.

Yes, like, every passenger reads the fare card, so that'll sort it :roll:

Not sure that will create much of a mad rush to buy a multi-seater.

What so the one in a thousand that actually reads a tariff card will be better informed?

The East Fife zone, specifically. In Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline and Levenmouth I suspect they're predominantly 4-seat saloons, thus just like the vast majority of locations where all you need is four seats for an HC plate.

In fact, just in St Andrews specifically, which accounts for roughly 90% of the HCs in the East zone, I suspect (including the train station at Leuchars).

The only other place in the East zone with any more than a couple of HCs is the town of Cupar, and 4-seater saloons have always ruled the roost there.

As I said, it's almost certainly related to the student/golf/tourism market in St Andrews.

We haven't yet carried a million passengers but based on the number of people who I has seen check the tariff card (0) you probably wont be far from the correct figure.

To be fair, it's often in a ridiculous place, like on the door in the back of a TX. Is the punter supposed to lie down on the floor to read it?
