Would like to hear driver's side of story here. Doubt he'd throw her out (and lose the fare, and risk something like this) just for the fun of it, or over a minor disagreement.

Claims a vulnerable woman was dumped on an "isolated" country road by a taxi driver are being investigated.

Wakefield Council is probing the alleged incident, which is said to have happened in December.

It is claimed that the passenger was left on the A655 between Wakefield and Normanton after an argument over the fare, at around midnight.

The police were contacted about the allegation, which was revealed at a licensing committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

In a briefing to councillors on recent activity in the Wakefield district , licensing enforcement officer Paul Dean said: "We're investigating an incident where a driver abandoned a vulnerable female on an isolated country lane late at night over a fare dispute.

"I believe the police have been told that he took her mobile phone from her as well."

Mr Dean also said the council is investigating another incident where a driver is alleged to have used "discriminatory" language to abuse a disabled female passenger.

It's claimed the cabbie refused to give the elderly woman a lift when she was unable to get to the car where it was parked.

A female taxi passenger who was allegedly left on an isolated country road became "volatile" after admitting she was unable to pay a fare, an investigation has found.

Wakefield Council said the woman, who left the taxi on the A655 between Normanton and Wakefield one night in December, did not co-operate with their enquiry after the incident was reported.

The local authority said that the passenger had been picked up from a police custody suite shortly before midnight.

They added that the driver had offered to return her to the station after she said she couldn't pay her fare, but that she declined and left the car on the A655 of her own accord.

The council's licensing committee was told on Wednesday that the driver in question had been given a written warning. No further action will be taken.

A council spokesperson said: "The driver explained on interview that after collecting the female from the police station custody suite she became volatile and disclosed she had no money to pay.

"The driver explained he was not offering free transport and offered to return her to the police station.

"The female left the vehicle of her own decision, failing to pay."

So what did the written warning say?

"Don't pick up headcases from police custody suites"?

so he's had a written warning which might mean his badge is not renewed because he refused to take her home for free

Surely if the police made the booking for the person to be picked up ,the contract was between the police and the Taxi/private hire company and must be held responsible for payment of fare.

What was the driver supposed to do ? If he locked the doors and took her back to the police station he could be charged with kidnapping/ false imprisonment. Only last night one of our drivers had a ‘runner’ worth £50, the driver is experienced and usually quite savvy. The guy seemed respectable and was going to an affluent area. He managed to flag a passing police car down (the guy had got out to use the ATM, and then set off like Usain Bolt!) they had a quick spin around and gave him a crime reference number, adding he hadn’t been assaulted and his cab wasn’t damaged, and they haven’t got the resources to spend any more time on the incident.

back in I think it was 1992 a driver went to pick up two lads after the local police phoned for a taxi. they were going to Corby the car stopped to drop them off opposite Corby police station at which point they pulled a knife out and robbed him. Being so close to Corby police station he went there and they shrugged their shoulders and said nothing much they could do. The local police had handed the knife back to the lads as the blade was under the length to be deemed legal. The identities of the lads were apparently unknown

The moral of the story Police don't take responsibility for nothing once they've booted them out the door that's their responsibility over and done with

The same with hospitals phoning up for a taxi for a patient who turns out to have no means of paying for the taxi

But that's also down to the driver to check before they leave.

I pick up loads and loads of work from hospitals, and always check if they look iffy.

If they are going out of town I always ask which cash point they want to stop at, or I take card up front.
