Taxi passenger knifed in neck in Clydebank horror stabbing as cab left splattered with blood

A man was repeatedly stabbed in front of a horrified taxi driver yesterday outside the shop where Paige Doherty was murdered.

The victim is understood to have been knifed in the neck in a cab in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, after a passenger from another vehicle attacked him in the early hours of the morning.

A source close to the taxi driver, who works for Clydebank Private Hire, said the inside of the cab was left splattered in blood when the passenger was stabbed several times around the head on Fleming Avenue - just yards from the abandoned deli where 15-year-old Paige was killed in 2016.

Police Scotland said they were investigating the incident yesterday and a 27-year-old man had been arrested in connection with a road traffic matter.

The force said they could give no details on the injured man, saying “inquiries are ongoing”.

A source told the Record the attacker fled the scene on foot following the incident, which happened at around 4.20am.

They said: “The cabbie got out to remonstrate with the driver of the car in front of him.

“Then someone got out of the car, ran to the cab and opened the door and started stabbing the passenger in the neck.

“There was blood everywhere. It was right outside the deli where Paige Doherty was murdered.

“The guy with the knife then ran away.

“The cab driver is ok, just a bit shaken by what happened. But he wasn’t harmed.”

Police sealed off a section of the road after being called to the scene along with paramedics yesterday.

Forensics examined the area around the taxi, a silver Skoda which was removed by a recovery truck at around 11am.

Meanwhile, detectives removed CCTV from a neighbouring shop, Fleming’s Gifts.

Owner Gulzar ‘Iky’ Ahmed said it was taken away before he viewed it.

He said: “I arrived for work at 6am and the street was cordoned off. The police wouldn’t let us through.

“They let us through to open up at 9am and took the CCTV.

“They haven’t told us anything about what has happened.”

Mr Ahmed’s CCTV camera provided key evidence in Paige’s murder trial, which saw John Leatham convicted of stabbing the teenager 61 times after she stopped at his delicatessen in March 2016.

Leatham had originally been sentenced to a minimum of 27 years but saw his sentence reduced to 23 years.

Leatham admitted her murder and claimed to have “panicked” after Paige threatened to report him for sexual assault after she applied for a job.

His car was filmed on CCTV at the site where her body was dumped - a wooded area close to Glasgow’s Great Western Road, less than a mile from the deli.

Police investigating yesterday’s attack are also understood to be examining a force CCTV camera erected outside the store following Paige’s death.

Residents living nearby said they did not see the incident but saw emergency crews arriving at the scene.

One mum said: “At around 4.45am I saw the ambulance and the first responder arrive. They were focused on the taxi.

“The road got closed soon after that.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences which happened on Fleming Avenue, Clydebank, at 4.20am.

“Inquiries are ongoing.”
