But presumably this has cost him a bob or two, and I wonder what's happened to the revoked plates?


Blackpool taxi driver loses appeal to keep licences due to state of vehicles

Steven Lewis, had the licences revoked between February and April last year, but has been trying to appeal the decision ever since.

A Blackpool taxi driver, who 'persistently failed' to keep his vehicles in a good condition, has lost his appeal to keep his licences.

Steven Lewis, of Plymouth Road in Blackpool, had his Hackney carriage licences revoked by Blackpool Council's public protection committee between February and April 2019.

The 64-year-old appealed the decision at the magistrates' court but on August 21 later that year, his appeal was formally dismissed.

Mr Lewis, not satisfied with the decision, then appealed to the crown court, saying that the committee and the magistrates were wrong and asking the crown court to give him a lesser sanction.

However, on Friday last week (February 21) the Court dismissed his appeal, confirming that the licensing committee and later Magistrates’ decisions were correct.

The Court informed Mr Lewis that they were not satisfied he would maintain his vehicles to the correct standard and citied his persistent failure to meet the standards set out in law and in the council’s policy.

Cllr Adrian Hutton, chairman of both the licensing committee and public protection sub-committee, said: “We are committed to ensuring that vehicle licence holders are held to the very highest standards.

“The safety and wellbeing of the travelling public is not something we take lightly – we were pleased to see our initial decision was vindicated in this instance.”

Had a quick look at the online public register. He appears to have 4 plates. He doesn't appear to hold either a Hackney or PH drivers badge. Not going to see if he has any PH cars as it would take to long.

Certainly only HCs mentioned in the article, which might indicate he didn't have any PHVs, but who knows?


Had a quick look on MoT database, obviously all quite old - saloons early teenagers, roughly, and the TX2 is late-teens

Not particularly high mileages for that age, though - the saloons averaging about 100,000, but the TX2 is twice round the clock. But that's not particularly high for a TX at that age - in fact 213,000 over 18 years is only 12,000 per annum, so something not quite right there.

But the MoT histories don't look particularly bad, in fact quite good for cars of that age, perhaps.

Of course, given the mileage of the saloons they've probably only been used for a relatively short time in the trade, so who knows what he's had in the past, and what his history is with regard to the council inspections.

Blackpool is infamous for having the oldest fleet of taxis in the uk

which is fine as long as they are well maintained clearly this individual didn't want to spend the money so now he's an ex proprietor

I suspect if he owned 4 he was renting them out perhaps rather than driving himself
