Taxi arson leads to curfew A LERWICK taxi operator is to be tagged for six months after admitting deliberately setting fire to one of his vehicles in the hope of cashing in on the insurance. Rainbow Taxis owner Anwarul Haque Chaudery, of Sandveien, appeared for sentencing before Lerwick Sheriff Court yesterday morning (Wednesday) after pleading guilty last month. Chaudery had hired two men to set one of his cars alight on 13 July last year. His company had run up significant debts due to a price war between different taxi firms in the town. However even if Chaudery's plan had been successful, he would not have received any insurance cash as the vehicle came under a hire purchase agreement. The car was completely destroyed in the blaze. Sheriff Graeme Napier told Chaudery that he was entitled to send him to jail for the offence. Instead he ordered him to stay at his home address between the hours 7pm and 6am for the next six months. |
