A rare piece from the Fakenham & Wells Times :-o

Not much to see, really, but suspect drivers not getting much for these runs. Like the Co-op scheme featured a few months ago :?

According to Google Fakenham is a small town in Norfolk :)

Shoppers at a market town store could be getting a free ride home thanks to a new community scheme.

The Original Factory Shop in Fakenham has announced the launch of a free taxi service, a new initiative which it hopes will help customers. The service has no maximum mile limit and is at the discretion of the store's manager.

The discount retailer has teamed up with a local taxi firm, Tiny's Taxi, to offer customers a ride home when they spend £30 or more. Customers must be a member of the retailer's loyalty scheme to benefit from the taxi service.

Nicholas Deere, store manager at The Original Factory Shop, said: "Many of our customers walk to us or take public transport but this means they sometimes miss out on the best deals we offer as they can't easily get their shopping home. The launch of this new service helps to take the stress away.

"We were overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our community who helped reopen the store following the fire and are forever grateful."

The store was devastated by a fire in 2014, which damaged nearby buildings and destroyed the shop. It saw the business close for four years before it reopened its doors in 2018.

Tiny's Taxi already offers vehicles to pick up people's deliveries or shopping from Argos, such as washing machines and fridges, and helps get them out of the car and into homes. They also offer flat fares around the town for elderly people.

Mark Griffin, one of the owners at Tiny's Taxi, said: "There are a lot of elderly people who can get into the town but struggle to get larger items home. That's why when the Factory Shop called we said yes straight away.

"We have a good customer based in Fakenham with elderly people in the town, so it is great knowing we have done something for them. My grandparents live locally so it feels good to give back to the community."

The incentive is now live at the Fakenham store after a successful trial period.

I've had washing machines, TVs and even an armchair once in the back of my transit. They're like wheelchairs that you can charge extra for loading and unloading :)

until it scratches your floor dragging it across .........................washing machines are very heavy

I used to dread house move jobs when I had my WAV as they were always only a few hundred yards and were booking you because you were cheaper than "man with a van"

Oh and wait till someone wants to move a double bed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Problem is, there is no legal way of charging more for carrying these items, other than the 20p extra !
The only possible way is stated below (taken from CWAC tariff chart)

“This vehicle may be hired for special occasions which may be subject to an extra charge agreed by the hirer. Prior written agreement to the additional charge must be received from the hirer in advance of the journey. In all cases, this agreement must be made at least 48 hours prior to the commencement of the journey”

This could be an interesting one. Does a hackney have to use the meter and charge no more than the metered fare if it is carrying just goods?

in most house/furniture moves there is usually a passenger in the front anyway but I believe you are still restricted to just the meter as you are "hired"

Not sure unloading and loading out of your taxi/PH is the problem, it's helping them into the punters address.

I never used to do them sort of jobs because they used us because it was only £5 whereas a man with a van would have charged £25.

Most people are fairly reasonable, I've got no requirement to carry cargo so if you want me to do you a favour then you play nice.

HC. I have to carry you. I don't have to take your washing machine. If it wants to make special arrangements for its carriage then it can do.

The license is for the carriage of passengers.
