Not sure what the point of this article is, really. It says the scheme has been running for a number of years, but makes it sound like it's just been 'set up', and the photo caption says it's a new initiative :?

Or perhaps this firm has just taken the scheme over?

Anyway, the usual free advertising or perhaps public information aimed at students?

And, of course, such schemes are hardly unknown elsewhere.

A good way for a particular firm to get a contract, perhaps, or some sort of exclusivity, but certainly not for me [-(

The Safe Taxi Scheme is a delayed pay system which means students are not stuck if they lose their purse or spend all their money

Police have praised an innovative system which stops Plymouth students being stranded on a night out.

Local taxi firm, Need A Cab, has set up a 'Safe Taxi Scheme', which lets students pay the day after through the university, to stop young people walking home alone or through an unfamiliar area.

The scheme, which has been running for a number of years, is available to anyone who has lost their purse or wallet or spent all their money and cannot afford a taxi home.

Anyone who uses the scheme must be able to produce their student card and number, as well as be able to pay the fare the following day at the Student Union.

The Plymouth University Policing Scheme said the service was "excellent" and said there is now "no need to walk home in the dark alone".

Officers urged students to "make sure you and your course mates are aware of this".

Need A Cab also send anyone who books via mobile phone a free text, with the registration of the taxi that is being sent to you, the make, model and colour of the vehicle, the drivers name and the arrival time.

The taxi company stats that this is "a service unique to Need A Cab for your safety and to make sure you get in the correct vehicle".

All Need A Cab drivers wear company uniform so they are "easy to identify" and are the "only company officially recommended by the University of Plymouth Students' Union.

Anyone else see the flaw here? If the student has lost their purse or wallet their student card would most likely be in said purse or wallet. #-o

I see the sense in trying to get students home safety if they have done or lost their money.

But maybe the best way is to have an account with an operator who can send a car and bill the union themselves.

In other words the operator gets the grief of getting the money, not the driver.
