Well this is all a bit bizarre - not the robbery as such, but arrested by armed police at council offices and with a press photographer in attendance? :-o

Suspect a lot more to this than just the taxi robbery :?

There's a brief video on the Advertiser's website of the suspects and police exiting the council offices, but I couldn't get it to play properly, although I doubt it shows much more than the photos.

THIS is the moment an Essex man arrested on suspicion of robbing a Swindon taxi driver swore at a reporter.

He was one of three men arrested by armed police inside Swindon Borough Council offices on Princes Street on Wednesday afternoon.

It follows a terrifying robbery on Sunday that saw a taxi driver threatened with a machete by men on Corporation Street.

They stole £40 from the driver then got into a Fiat Punto that was travelling behind the taxi. The getaway car drove off towards the Transfer Bridges roundabout.

A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Police said: “At 1.25pm we received information which led to officers attending Wat Tyler House in Princes Street, Swindon.

“Three men, aged 21, 24 and 27, all from Essex, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

“They are currently in custody at Gablecross police station.

“A blue Fiat has also been seized as part of our enquiries.”

Following Sunday’s robbery Det Sgt Justin Downes said: “This was understandably very frightening for the driver and fortunately he wasn’t injured but was incredibly shaken up.

“We are really keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help – maybe you were driving in the area at the time and may have captured footage on a dash cam which could help. Please get in touch with any information by calling 101.”

Nothing else here to suggest it was anything particularly out of the ordinary... :?

Men accused of robbing taxi driver of £40 appear before Swindon magistrates

https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/new ... gistrates/

THREE men accused of robbing a taxi driver at the point of a machete appeared before Swindon magistrates.

Jordan Collins, 24, of Clemence Street, Tower Hamlets, Landen McCarthy, 31, of Silversea Drive, Southend-on-Sea, and Mitchell Rhodes, 27, of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm their personal details.

None of the men entered pleas to the robbery charge.

Collins and McCarthy were granted bail and Rhodes was remanded in custody. They are due before Swindon Crown Court n April 17 for a plea and pre-trial preparation hearing.

The men’s arrest follows an incident on the night of Sunday, March 1, when a taxi driver was allegedly threatened with machete by two of his passengers. The vehicle was on Corporation Street at the time.

The attackers were said to have fled with £40 cash, got into a getaway car being driven by a third man and sped off towards Transfer Bridges.

In the wake of the robbery, Det Sgt Justin Downes of Swindon CID said: “This was understandably very frightening for the driver and fortunately he wasn’t injured but was incredibly shaken up.”

Men accused of robbing taxi driver of £40 to stand trial

TWO men will stand trial in October over allegations they robbed a Swindon taxi driver of approximately £40.

Appearing before Swindon Crown Court on Friday, Mitchell Rhodes, 27, of no fixed address, and Landen McCarthy, 31, of Silversea Drive, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, pleaded not guilty to a single charge of robbery.

A third defendant, Jordan Collins, 24, of Clemence Street, Tower Hamlets, pleaded guilty.

The men are accused of robbing a taxi driver at knifepoint in Corporation Street, Swindon, on March 1 this year.

The trial is expected to last five days and will begin on October 12.

McCarthy – the only defendant present in person at court – was represented by Alec Small, Rhodes by Claire Mawer and Collins by Rob Ross at the plea hearing on Friday morning. Ian Fenny appeared for the Crown.

Swindon taxi robbery accused 'on pub date', jurors told

An Essex man accused of robbing a taxi driver with two friends told jurors he was on a date in Stratton at the time of the theft.

Mitchell Rhodes, 27, denies robbing the SN1 Cars driver at knifepoint in Alexandra Road, Broadgreen, after 10.30pm on March 1.

Yesterday, jurors at Swindon Crown Court heard claims he was at the Rat Trap pub in Highworth Road on a date at the time of the robbery.

He admitted having earlier that evening been with pals Jordan Collins and Landen McCarthy, who have already pleaded guilty to involvement in the crime.

Rhodes was caught on CCTV with the pair at Baileys Farm Gardens, Walcot, around 40 minutes before the theft. And earlier that day a CCTV camera at a Shell garage in Mead Way, West Swindon, pictured him with the blue Fiat Punto used as the getaway car.

But the jury was told Rhodes had been dropped off at the Rat Trap pub by Collins and McCarthy after they left Baileys Farm Gardens.

He had inadvertently left his phone in the car, which is why mobile phone mast data suggested his device was travelling with his friend’s phone. Rhodes’ phone had continued to receive and send texts, but he said his friends had sometimes used his phone when theirs had run out of credit.

The court was told it had not been possible for Rhodes to take part in a police identity parade, as the victim had left the UK for Pakistan when the pandemic hit. His only evidence before the jury was from his interview with detectives, which was video-recorded and played to the court earlier this week.

The taxi driver told police the attacker who had sat behind him in his cab, held a knife to his throat and demanded “give me the f***ing money” was white, of large build, aged 20 to 30 and had an orange-red messy beard.

At the time, Rhodes was 26 years old, 6ft 6ins and 22 stone and did not have a beard.

Rhodes, of no fixed address, denies robbery. McCarthy and Collins had already pleaded guilty to the charge, jurors were told.

The trial continues.

Jail for gang that robbed Swindon taxi driver at knifepoint

Image

THREE men who robbed a Swindon taxi driver at knifepoint have been jailed for almost 16 years.

Sending Jordan Collins, Landen McCarthy and Mitchell Rhodes down at Swindon Crown Court on Tuesday morning, Judge Jason Taylor QC said of the robbery: “It must have been terrifying for the victim.”

The trio robbed an SN1 Cars driver at knifepoint in Alexandra Road, Broadgreen, on March 1.

Audio from a CCTV camera on a nearby house captured the moment Essex man Rhodes, 27, got into the passenger seat behind the driver, placed a blade to his face and shouted: “Give me the f***ing money now, give me the money.” Collins acted as look-out down the street and McCarthy stood by the cab door, preventing the driver from escaping.

His victim, whose interview with detectives was recorded on video and played to the jury, said to police: “I told him just take anything you want. Just take, but don’t hurt me.” The victim was not cross-examined during the trial as he had returned to Pakistan at the start of the lockdown.

Rhodes stole around £40 to £60 from the cab armrest, before fleeing with his two co-defendants in a Fiat Punto down Manchester Road and off towards the County Ground.

The heavy-set six footer had denied being part of the robbery, although admitted he had been with Collins, 25, and McCarthy, 22, earlier that day. He told jurors he had been dropped off at the Rat Trap pub, Stratton, for a date – but had left his phone in the Punto.

Rhodes was arrested at Swindon Borough Council’s offices in Wat Tyler House on March 4 – his 27th birthday. The man swore at the Adver’s reporter as he was waiting to be put into a police custody van.

In October, the jury took two hours and 40 minutes to find Rhodes, who has a previous conviction for robbery and attempted robbery, guilty by a majority verdict of 10 to two. Rhodes held his head in his hands as the guilty verdict was read out.

Prosecutor David Scutt told the sentencing hearing: “It’s said by the Crown the robbery was planned and orchestrated by Mr Rhodes. He was assisted by Mr McCarthy and Collins.”

Robert Ward, for Rhodes, questioned whether his client was in the leading role, suggesting that the CCTV evidence did not support that. His client was remorseful and, in a letter to the judge, had resolved to learn from his mistakes and put himself in a better position upon his eventual release from prison.

Clare Fear, for McCarthy, said the man had seen his life fall apart since the offence was committed. His father had been shot dead on his doorstep in Ireland in a case of mistaken identity and he had recently become a father.

“This defendant’s main concern is not for himself but for his mother and how she will cope and also for the mother of his son and how she will cope and for himself because of his behaviour he will miss out on a not insignificant part of his child’s childhood,” she said.

Emma Handslip, for Collins, said her client had experienced a recent family tragedy. He had pleaded guilty at an earlier stage in the proceedings and realised he had made a “very, very serious mistake”. He played a lesser role in the robbery.

All the men were remorseful, their barristers said.

Rhodes, of no fixed address and appearing in court via video link from Bullingdon prison, was sentenced to seven years and one month’s imprisonment. Recent changes in the law mean that he must serve two thirds of his sentence behind bars.

McCarthy, of Westcliff-on-Sea, near Southend, who pleaded guilty on the day of his trial received five years and three months’ imprisonment.

Collins, of Clemence Street, Tower Hamlets, was jailed for three years and seven months.

Judge Taylor said: “You, Mr Rhodes, are of noticeably large stature and would undoubtedly be intimidating.

“Couple that with the aggression, the shouting and the menacing presence of Mr McCarthy – again, somebody who is very tall – blocking the means of escape it is bad enough.

“But when you reflect the fact the taxi driver was pulled back into his seat by you, Mr Rhodes, before holding a knife to his face, threatening to cut him up it is understanding in his [video] interview he said he feared for his life.”

THE TAXI driver jumped by a gang of three men “feared for his life”, the detective who brought the robbers to justice said.

Essex men Mitchell Rhodes, 27, Jordan Collins, 25, and Landen McCarthy, 22, were jailed for a total of 16 years at Swindon Crown Court this week for robbing the Swindon cabbie at knifepoint in March.

Wiltshire Police has now released the men’s custody shots.

Welcoming the jail time handed down to the men, officer in the case Det Con Louise Kuklinski said: "The sentences given in this case I hope will go some way towards demonstrating that serious crime, whether it be involving the use of weapons, knives or any other violent acts will not be tolerated in Wiltshire.

"We will work tirelessly and without any hesitation to bring offenders who commit these serious offences to justice.

"The victim in this case was just doing his job when he was tricked into attending what he thought was a genuine call for a taxi.

"He was absolutely terrified, and he made it clear that throughout this vicious attack he feared for his life, thankfully he was not physically injured but I am left with no doubt that this crime will have a lasting impact upon him."
