Taxi firm forced to shut for month amid coronavirus spread fears

A North Somerset taxi firm has been forced off the road for a month – due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Bosses at Nailsea and Backwell Taxis have taken the decision to suspend business for a month to reduce risks to passengers and its drivers.

The firm has announced it will not be able to do any bookings beyond March 20,

Some of the firm’s staff are currently in quarantine, where others have pregnant family members.

Other staff members are stuck abroad as countries lockdown and on arrival home will have to self quarantine.

It is hoped that the taxi business will be back in operation by April 20, as long as Government guidelines at the time allow.

All customers with pre-paid bookings will be contacted and refunded.

In a statement on the firm’s Facebook page it said: “Due to the risks to our customers and staff of Corvid19 we have reluctantly taken the decision to suspend running for one month and will not be able to do any bookings beyond Friday 20th March.

“We hope to resume on April 20 or earlier, subject to guidelines at that time.

“We will be contacting all customers that have bookings and refunding any that have paid in advance.

“This is a very tough time for all.

“You may not fear the virus or what it could do to you, but as our drivers and passengers share a confined space we fear inadvertently passing it on to those that it could have a devastating effect on.

“The cars are wiped down constantly but with many customers having underlying health problems we feel the risk to them is too high.

“Sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Why not just pass the booking onto another firm?

Strange that every car is off the road though.

That said I wish all the drivers and their families the best and hope they get back to work fit and well.

I can see a few customers getting upset

It's getting ridiculously quiet out there BUT we still have a few customers petrified that we won't be able to get them to supermarkets,work the chemists so from that point of view you are providing a lifeline

I would also say that customers with "underlying health problems" probably constitutes the bulk of customers and they still need access to food and medicine

I suspect this is more about keeping themselves safe than their customers which may be counter productive because our government wants us all to catch this and gain immunity just not all at once
