Well this is all a bit bizarre, but a good example of 'trial by social media'.

Not sure who the Zaheed person is who is suddenly mentioned in the firm's statement, but presumably he's one of the proprietors or managers at the firm. Had a look at the firm's Facebook page, but no sign of the statement - maybe it's been pulled.

But, as someone on here is fond of saying, this demonstrates the value of CCTV, and voice as well =D>

Police release statement after man claims taxi driver 'assaulted' elderly woman at Asda

A full investigation has taken place

Police have revealed a taxi driver will face no charges after reports on social media claimed they had assaulted an elderly woman at Asda in Boston.

Following an investigation which included speaking to the taxi driver and the woman, a police spokesman confirmed the incident was a misunderstanding and no offence had taken place.

The investigation came after a video was posted on social media where a man is heard accusing the driver of hitting the woman.

A spokesman from Lincolnshire Police said: "We received a report of an incident in the Asda car park, Boston, on May 4, involving an elderly woman and an Acorn Taxi driver.

"We have looked into this and spoken to the driver and the woman involved.

"We can confirm that was a misunderstanding and no offence was found to have taken place."

Acorn Taxis posted a statement on its Facebook page a day after the incident standing by their employee.

The statement said: "We would firstly like to thank everyone for their concern regarding the safety of our passengers. Many people will by now have seen the various social media posts regarding an incident that occurred yesterday at Asda.

"Our passengers safety within our vehicles is very important to us and any incidents like this are thoroughly investigated. This incident is no different, all parties involved have been contacted by both us and the police to confirm what has happened.

"The council have also phoned regarding the situation and to confirm without evidence of an attack occurring we cannot jump to any conclusions.

"When an accusation is made it is important to get all of the relevant information from those involved. We should not automatically make assumptions based on what a person believes they have seen, especially without evidence to prove this.

"The driver in question has denied that she had ever attacked the passenger. Further to this we have had a phone call from the customer involved and confirmation from her that she was not attacked by the driver, there is a voice recording of this.

"We also have video footage from inside the vehicle which does not show any attack taking place. All of this evidence has been passed onto police as required.

"Accusations like this can have life altering consequences, nobody deserves to be treated in this way based on the word of people who were not directly involved.

"Without any evidence we shouldn't assume that a persons version of events are correct."

They added: "In a situation like this where there is no evidence of anything happening and the driver has denied the accusation, Zaheed must back the driver and show his support to that driver.

"Just as anyone else in the same position being accused of something that they have not done would expect from their employer.

"This matter is now in the hands of both the police and the council who will continue their investigations with all of the evidence that they have.

"Please we would appreciate that in future if anybody has any video footage or accusations regarding the conduct of any of our drivers that this should be taken to the police and the council to be dealt with correctly.

"Posts like this on Facebook with incorrect accusations are not helpful especially when a driver is innocent. These matters should be dealt with by the appropriate authorities as they are now.

"No further comments will be made regarding this incident as it is now under investigation."

So hope everyone spotted that the accused driver is also female? You have to read pretty closely to notice that [-(

Also, for other lovers of fine detail, the last few paragraphs show the correct way to present a lengthy quote that's divided into several paragraphs.

Quote marks are used at the beginning of each paragraph, but no quote marks at the end of each paragraph, except for the final paragraph of the quote. So:

Quote:
"This matter is now in the hands of both the police and the council who will continue their investigations with all of the evidence that they have.

"Please we would appreciate that in future if anybody has any video footage or accusations regarding the conduct of any of our drivers that this should be taken to the police and the council to be dealt with correctly.

"Posts like this on Facebook with incorrect accusations are not helpful especially when a driver is innocent. These matters should be dealt with by the appropriate authorities as they are now.

"No further comments will be made regarding this incident as it is now under investigation."

Noticed a few times that articles posted on here have had such paragraphs joined together, which isn't a bad idea, because the newspaper websites often tend to use very short paragraphs.

But if joining such paragraphs together, the quote marks in the middle should be removed. So this is not the way to do it:

Quote:
"This matter is now in the hands of both the police and the council who will continue their investigations with all of the evidence that they have. "Please we would appreciate that in future if anybody has any video footage or accusations regarding the conduct of any of our drivers that this should be taken to the police and the council to be dealt with correctly.

"Posts like this on Facebook with incorrect accusations are not helpful especially when a driver is innocent. These matters should be dealt with by the appropriate authorities as they are now. "No further comments will be made regarding this incident as it is now under investigation."

The quote marks midway through the paragraphs should be removed:

Quote:
"This matter is now in the hands of both the police and the council who will continue their investigations with all of the evidence that they have. Please we would appreciate that in future if anybody has any video footage or accusations regarding the conduct of any of our drivers that this should be taken to the police and the council to be dealt with correctly.

"Posts like this on Facebook with incorrect accusations are not helpful especially when a driver is innocent. These matters should be dealt with by the appropriate authorities as they are now. No further comments will be made regarding this incident as it is now under investigation."

Ah Acorn taxis owned and operated by some of the same people involved in a lot of local companies and I've heard quite a few stories about their business ethics

Suffice to say they are 90 percent company owned cars with the drivers on split purse they don't like to use owner drivers
