Don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but again there should be consistency throughout the country either way :idea:

Plastic screens in taxis to protect drivers and passengers have won the support of Slough Borough Council - but the authority will not be enforcing this on drivers it licenses.

The National Private Hire and Taxi Association has already described clear polycarbonate protection screens between the front and back compartments of taxis as offering the best protection possible when combined with PPE facemasks and extensive cleaning protocols.

Cllr Pavitar K. Mann, Slough Council cabinet member for planning and regulation, said the authority agreed.

He said: “Covid-19 is not a short term pandemic and the council has taken the decision screens are a benefit if added to a vehicle.

“However, licence holders must have them professionally installed and the screens must be of the right quality so residents have confidence using licensed vehicles."

The council does not intend to bring in any special tests or checks that might make drivers' lives more difficult.

But Cllr Mann said: “Drivers are reminded to deep clean vehicles regularly as this virus is transmitted by droplets from coughs and sneezes.

"The council appreciates there are costs involved for the drivers, but the safety of drivers and passengers is paramount.”

The authority is recommending that drivers contact their insurer prior to any installation and use trained professionals providing verified polycarbonate units which can cost up to £500.

With lockdown continuing and the after affects expected to change long term behaviours coupled with limited public transport, it is predicted there will be a rise in taxi use.

It would have been better if the recent DfT guidance wasn't so bloody wishy washy on this subject, but must say well done to councils taking such a sensible approach like Slough, and B&H. =D>

I'm not convinced about them, but if this mess goes on for a long time maybe I will have to have a rethink.

The issue isn't the cost, it's that I'm not convinced they actually work in a saloon.

There is no guarantee they work in any vehicle.
