Racist thug who attacked taxi driver is told there is 'no place for racism' Magistrates have slammed a racist thug who launched a ferocious attack on a taxi driver, telling him that there is no place for racism in this country. Andrew Robert Leslie Knight, 46, attacked Osman Yavuz in Saltash on September 8 of last year. Knight, of Lyner Drive in Saltash, recently appeared for sentencing at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court having pleaded guilty to assault. Sentencing Knight, magistrates ruled that the offence was racially aggravated and added that they were imposing a custodial sentence, albeit a suspended one, because “there is no place for racism in this country” and they “treat the offence seriously”. The court heard how Knight landed a headbutt and kicked the taxi driver victim while he was on the floor with a shod foot. The shocking act of violence took place outside licensed premises and in front of Mr Yavuz’s father. Knight was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months. He must complete 120 hours of unpaid work and pay Mr Yavuz £150 compensation as well as £85 court costs and a £122 victim surcharge. |
