Redcar taxi firm set up by three friends to take its first passengers next week

Image

A Redcar taxi firm - set up by three friends - will take its first passengers next week. Red-car Taxis is "dedicated to Redcar and the surrounding areas".

It's the brainchild of Darren Lee, Barkat Hussain and Rob Wiley - who are all local to the area.

Darren owns successful firm Practical Van Hire, Barkat - known as Mr B - is a former steelworker and is a well-known face in the area after running a shop in Dormanstown for years.

And Rob Wiley has worked in the family business, Wiley's butchers in Marske, among other things.

Rob said: "Redcar people tend to want a local firm. "I think a lot of people do. "We don't want to rule the world.

"We want to run this as a decent, reliable local business with enough cars to keep Redcar and Cleveland happy.

"The business idea for Redcar and Cleveland is a little bit different to Middlesbrough, which is a much bigger town.

"What works in one place sometimes doesn't work in another." And the response has been "brilliant", Rob says.

"People say 'it's about time we had a local firm'. "We can't compete with the likes of Boro Cars or Royal Cars financially, we know that.

"They could fill our garage with money. "But we can try to do a good job."

Darren "never stops" and is "excellent at what he does", says Rob. "He knows the game inside out.

"Mr B worked at British Steel and owned a shop in Dormanstown, everybody knows him."

The friends have also drawn up a contract that says none of them can sell their share without the others agreeing, in the hope it will reassure drivers.

They start on Monday with the phone lines open 24 hours a day, seven days a week - and a fleet of 20 cars.

"It's a start," says Rob,"we are hoping that will grow. "It's a good job I'm already bald, otherwise I'd probably lose my hair.

"But we just felt there was hole in the market, we talked about it one day - and so now we're giving it a go."

Can't do anything other than wish them well.

Starting a new firm in the middle of a pandemic takes balls, but knowing your market is key, and maybe they do.

Either they live together, or they just ignore Social Distancing.

I wish them well however.

It'll either make them or break them, but if they can make it during a time when this Covid 19 caused recession is breaking many established firms they'll have earned their deserved success.

Good luck to them.

New cab firm 'amazed' after mystery woman settles taxi runner's unpaid bill

https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/tees ... r-18794664

Repeat offender ran up £70 tab :: People have branded anonymous well-wisher an 'absolute legend' for 'kind and selfless act'

A taxi firm which claims it was "ripped off" by a persistent taxi runner has been "blown away" - after an anonymous well-wisher settled the bill.

Red-Car Taxis posted on social media, identifying the 'customer' they claimed had ran up a large tab with drivers by refusing to pay for three separate journeys.

Within hours a woman, who did not want to be named, rang the firm and paid the bill - saying they wanted to "thank those decent drivers" for their service.

Now people have branded her an "absolute legend" for her "wonderful and selfless act of kindness".

And the three friends who started Red-Car Taxis during lockdown, with dreams of providing a "decent, reliable" service for the town, says it has been "amazed" by the gesture.

They posted a picture of the offender, claiming they had "ripped us off so many times" they now owed £70 in unpaid fares.

"Hoped it wouldn't come to this," the post said, "but sometimes the only way to stop someone is to name and shame.

"It's not fair to our drivers who are working extremely hard, its them who lose out and it's wasting their time.

"We are trying so hard to provide a good service for Redcar, we can do without people like this."

The team was "amazed" when they received the phone call from the wellwisher.

"She felt so strongly about the drivers being ripped off that she paid the money herself," the firm said, "straight to each driver that was out of pocket.

"In her words, 'this is no way to wipe [the offender's] slate clean.

"I'm not paying their bill .. I'm thanking those decent drivers.

"We are amazed that someone would do this anonymously, not for recognition, not for fame but just an act of Kindness.

"It has definitely restored our faith in humanity."

Rob Wiley started the firm with fellow directors Barkat Hussain and Darren Lee a month ago and has grown the fleet from 20 cars to 35.

Rob said: "This happened to three different drivers and it will have happened to other firms too.

"We want the drivers to be happy, but something like that leaves a bad taste.

"It's just a nice gesture, we said 'there's no need' - but she said this is just what the area needs, a local business.

"There are some nice people out there."

And posters took to social media to voice their approval, claiming "there are angels out there".

One said: "That’s really lovely, your [taxi firm] just started out in lockdown too, what a lovely thing to do."

One man said: "What a fantastic thing to do. This woman really did not need to do this and has done out of the goodness of her heart."

While a lady added: "What an absolute legend this lady is.

"So kind and giving. Well done you whoever you are. I just hope now that all your drivers are aware of who this scammer is."

And another poster wrote: "Respect to all the humanity, this lady has shown the way, wow."

So these guys are completely new to the trade, started a month ago, during the Covid lockdown, and had 20 cars then, but have since grown to 35? :-s

Wasn't it this neck of the woods where the new start-up guy with one car was getting hundreds of calls a night, but strangely couldn't get any cars to work with him, and had to call it a day?

The way this appears to have panned out is that the non paying slag has got away with it.

Maybe the firm should still be putting pressure on the woman, maybe even getting the police involved.

And should she eventually pay up, then that money should be donated to charity.

So, after failing to pay the first time, they allowed her a second and even a third journey ??? Can’t see them being in business for long.
