Flintshire Council blasted over "ridiculous" Covid-19 measures A FLINTSHIRE man has blasted the council over the fact he's unable to be interviewed for a taxi licence application because it "doesn't have a big enough interview room". The man, wishing to remain anonymous, claims he has applied for a local role whereby he would drive children to and from school. The nature of the job means he needs to apply for a taxi licence from Flintshire Council - which requires he attend a formal interview. The man, who finds himself unemployed for the first time in 40 years, explained: "I contacted Flintshire Council's Licensing Department to be told they are not accepting any applications at the moment as they are working from home and do not have a room big enough in their Ewloe offices to carry out interviews which are Covid safe. "I was also advised that when they do get back to work in three to four weeks time there is a backlog of six to eight weeks for criminal checks. "This is a disgraceful state of affairs - I have two children to feed and need a job, I cannot do that on £74 a week job seekers allowance. "To me it's just a ridiculous excuse, an interview can be conducted safely if we're two meters apart - they said there needs to be glass screen in place and things like that, it's definitely a bit over the top. "It just smacks of more stumbling blocks caused by local authority red tape." And he says with schools going back in the next week, he fears some schoolchildren who don't have access to a bus service will be without school transport. Flintshire Council says it has been "adapting" its processes where it's been able, but that in order to process new driver applications, officers need to meet with applicants in person. The authority states that as personal sensitive data is discussed during the course of an appointment, the interview room needs to be "secure and private", in line with "Data Protection requirements" and also "safe to protect staff and customers from the risk of Covid-19". A spokesperson said: "A glass screen and audio equipment will be in place in the room we use for taxi applications at our offices at Ty Dewi Sant, Ewloe so that when the building reopens to the public we are able to take new driver applications in as safe an environment as possible. "A new driver application differs from a licence renewal because a range of checks need to be completed to ensure that an applicant it a ‘fit and proper person’ to hold a licence. "For example, checks are made with the DVLA, references are obtained, a Group II medical certificate must be provided and enhanced checks are made with the Disclosure and Barring Service. "The applicant’s identity needs to be verified, the right to work in the UK must be checked, and a verbal knowledge test must be taken. The whole process takes in excess of one hour. "Once the checks with external organisations are applied for the results can take up to eight weeks to be returned." |

Backlog for criminal checks??? What a load of baloney. We sent an application for a passenger assistant role to Leicestershire County Council a couple of weeks ago and the DBS was back in about a week. |
