Taxi driver punched two men after 'becoming involved in somebody's else argument' on Hanley night out

A taxi driver enjoying a night out became embroiled in a street disturbance and punched two people.

The incident happened as Md Miah was with a teenage friend in Trinity Street, Hanley, in the early hours of the morning.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard that his friend ‘squared up’ to a group of white males, who then moved out into the road.

Prosecutor Jamie Scott said CCTV captured Miah punching someone in the back.

His friend then delivered a knockout blow to someone else, who fell to the ground and was ‘out cold’.

The defendant began walking away, but returned a short while later. He hit another person to the back of the head.

Now 24-year-old Miah has admitted committing a public order offence on September 28 last year, which involved using threatening behaviour.

The court was told that he was apprehended by police near to Trinity Street.

Mr Scott said: “He was interviewed and commented that a racist remark had been delivered by one of the men in the group. He said he had felt threatened and he punched out in self-defence.

“Bearing in mind that the two people he struck were turned away from him.”

Andrew Baker, mitigating, said his client has been unable to work as a taxi driver since lockdown and is currently unemployed.

Both Miah’s parents have significant health issues and he helps look after them.

Judge Sally Hancox sentenced him to a 12-month conditional discharge and also ordered the defendant to pay £60 towards court costs.

She told him: “Having been on a responsible night out with friends, you find yourself in a position where you become involved in what to seems to be somebody else’s argument.

“What you should have done is continue to walk away.

“For whatever reason, you turn back, potentially to aid a friend. You return and find yourself involved in unlawful violence.”

Judge Hancox said Miah had ‘brought this matter entirely on himself’.

In this case I would imagine half a pint of vodka.
