Taxi driver smashed through fence during high speed police chase along quiet Middlesbrough streets

Nasir Ahmed was found guilty after standing trial at Teesside Magistrates' Court

A high speed taxi chase through Middlesbrough has landed a man with over £800 of court costs.

Nasir Ahmed appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Thursday to stand trial.

The 31-year-old previously denied wilfully obstructing PC Morris after a pursuit which weaved through Linthorpe and Acklam at around 5pm on April 11.

The chase is said to have sped through Harrow Road in Linthorpe and onto Green Lane, and also saw vehicles thunder down St Mary's Walk and Acklam Road.

The vehicle involved was a black and yellow taxi and was seen smashing through a homeowner's fence, on Coniston Grove, during the chase.

Witnesses reported that a man was 'led away in handcuffs' after the chase around narrow suburban streets.

Others said they heard tyres screeching and loud shouting on the street.

Ahmed, of Green Lane, Acklam, was also charged with breaking the coronavirus regulations, on the same day, but the charge was dropped due to not being in the public interest.

Ahmed was found guilty after a trial at Teesside Magistrates' Court.

He was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work.

Ahmed was also made subject to £770 court costs and £90 victim surcharge.

I'm amazed that this fella wasn't charged with dangerous driving, which can be imprisonable and often leads to a ban :-k

There must be a reason why he wasn't charged with that, but I'm buggered if I can work it out.

But what *was* he charged with - the article doesn't actually say, apart from the fact that the coronavirus charge was dropped.

And no word of a driving ban or even points? Got off pretty lightly if only penalty is £800 in fines and costs. Not so sure about his badge, though.

Anyway, found this, but the charges outlined here aren't presumably those he was found guilty of in court, but who knows?

Man arrested after high-speed Middlesbrough taxi chase

A MAN is due to appear in court charged with breaching coronavirus laws after a high speed taxi chase through streets on Teesside over the bank holiday weekend.

A 31 year old man is set to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court accused of obstructing or resisting a constable in the execution of their duty and contravening restrictions under coronavirus legislation.

A dozen police cars, vans and bikes attended Rydal Avenue in Acklam after the pursuit which weaved through Linthorpe and Acklam in the Middlesbrough area at around 5pm on Saturday evening prompting many calls to the emergency services.

The vehicle involved was a black and yellow taxi which eventually was seen smashing through a homeowner's fence during the chase.

A 22-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and other driving offences.

Locals said they had seen a man who had jumped from a car before being chased by police officers on foot across open land.

Others said they heard tyres screeching and loud shouting on the street.

The chase is said to have been reported going through through Harrow Road in Linthorpe and onto Green Lane, and also saw vehicles going down St Mary's Walk and Acklam Road.

A police car and an unmarked police 4x4 vehicle were parked on the corner of St Margaret's Grove as emergency services responded to the incident.

Residents reported two police cars remained at the scene after others had left.

Ah, I see - looks like it was another guy who was actually *driving* the 'taxi'?

Which would explain the story at the top of the thread - the article doesn't actually say he was the driver, so he was maybe just charged with obstructing police (and the Covid offence, which was dropped).

To be honest, I think I'd make a great detective O:) [-(

But maybe a bit too late in life for a career change

yes we know you're from Brighton but can we have less of this smutty language please! :-"

Seriously though it might help to understand what was going on if the reason he was being chased was better explained he must have been up to something he shouldn't if the police were chasing him and I seriously doubt they would engage in a high speed pursuit for a breach of lock down regulations!

Another thing - apart from that headline, there's nothing in the article to suggest he's actually a 'taxi driver', or that he was actually driving the car.

So looks like he was simply the passenger, and maybe the driver of the 'taxi' was actually the 'taxi driver', and the headline writer got their wires crossed - of course, sub-editors are responsible for the headlines, while reporters write the articles, so maybe the sub got the wrong end of the stick [-(

He was charged with Obstructing a Police Officer doing his Duty.

Obstruct PC doesn't allow a sentence to ban or add points, which is why I was surprised he wasn't charged with dangerous driving.

Unless the police couldn't identify him whilst chasing him and he was gone when they eventually caught up with the vehicle.

Certainly sounds plausible, but the younger guy was initially charged with failing to stop and other driving offences, while the guy in the photo was charged with the obstruction and Covid offences. So presumably at that time police thought the younger guy was the one driving.

Assuming the guy in the photo *is* a taxi driver, maybe the younger guy agreed to admit to driving, because he knew the older guy would probably lose his job.

Of course, we don't know what happened to the younger guy, but if he kept up with his claim that he was the one behind the wheel, and police had no definitive proof one way or the other, then they could only get the older guy for the obstruction offence.

Certainly seems very odd if the older guy *is* a taxi driver, and the vehicle *was* his taxi, for the other guy to be behind the wheel. Of course, that's an alternative explanation for the chase in the first place - the cab driver was allowing someone else to be at the wheel of his cab, which is obviously an offence in itself.

So if I was a betting man, my main theories would be:

- the younger guy, while not actually driving, agreed to take the rap so the older guy could keep his job as a cabbie;

- the younger guy *was* driving the taxi, but obviously wasn't licensed for it, hence the chase.

(I 'did an Edders' and missed the line in the original article about the obstruction charge. Did I say that I wouldn't make a very good detective? 8-[ )
