Taxi driver battered by passenger armed with knife in Erdington fare row

A fare-dodging taxi passenger pulled out a knife and battered the driver after travelling 15 miles between Wolverhampton and Erdington.

The cab driver picked up the man from an address in Wolverhampton just after 10am on Saturday, November 21.

But when the passenger arrived at his destination - Faulkners Farm Drive in Erdington - he refused to pay up and instead produced a knife.

The cabbie suffered a head injury and was then punched and kicked.

The passenger escaped and West Midlands Police are now attempting to trace the offender.

The force hasn't revealed exactly where the passenger was picked up from, but the fare between Wolverhampton city centre and Erdington is is thought to be around £30.

A statement from WMP read: "We are investigating an assault on a taxi driver after a man was picked up from an address in Wolverhampton just after 10am yesterday (Saturday 21 November) and dropped off in Erdington, Birmingham.

"The passenger refused to pay his fare and then produced a knife when both the taxi driver and he stepped outside of the vehicle. The driver sustained a minor injury to his head and was then punched and kicked.

"Enquiries continue to trace the offender and anyone with information is asked to contact us via live chat at west-midlands.police.uk between 8am and midnight, or call 101 anytime. Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111. Please quote crime reference 20BE/287947T/20."
