A rare headline of this type that doesn't use the t-word =D>

Bald tyre leads to court appearance for private hire driver

A 'BALD' tyre led to a Bradford cabbie appearing in court this week.

Wasim Hussain's vehicle had been spotted by wardens on Clarence Road in Saltaire on September 29 2019, and when they inspected it they found that the front near-side wheel was so worn down that it's cord was exposed.

The vehicle was displaying Tyersal Private Hire signage.

He was questioned, and told officers he had needed a spare tyre, but hadn't checked the condition of the spare before he fixed it on the car.

Hussain, 40, of Rufford Street, Bradford, was charged with the use of motor vehicle / trailer with tyre with any of the ply / cord exposed, and appeared in Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Bradford Council was prosecuting the case, and Hussain pleaded guilty to the charge.

Representing himself, he told magistrates that he had been unable to remove his minibus' spare tyre to replace a damaged one, so instead used a tyre that he had in his garden.

He said he had been on his last job of the day, and would have gone to get a new tyre when his shift ended.

He apologised to the court, and said he had never had any issues like this before.

Presiding Judge Justice Paul Broomhead said: "The courts take cars with bald tyres very seriously. This was aggravated by the fact that you are providing a service to the public. You were driving people round in an unsafe vehicle.

"When you got the tyre from your garden it would have been an idea to inspect it first, it would have been obvious it was bald."

Hussain was fined £200 and ordered to pay £200 costs and a £34 surcharge. Three points were added to his licence.

Like you'd change a wheel and wouldn't notice the tyre cord was exposed :---)

Also, note to journalists - strictly speaking, it's a spare wheel, not a spare tyre [-(

But makes a change from the most common error in pieces like this, namely 'breaks' instead of 'brakes' =;

I suspect he was offered a fixed penalty for the bald tyre.

But he didn't pay it thus the summons, thus the £434 final bill.
