Farmer ‘rammed taxi with tractor’ after throwing kebab at cabbie

AN irate farmer rammed a taxi with a tractor and lifted it into the air after a row with the driver, a court has heard.

James Peacock, 23, had earlier thrown a chicken kebab at the cabbie on the drive home, it is said.

The court heard Paul McKeown leapt out the way as Peacock speared his Vauxhall Insignia car with the tractor’s forks.

He is then said to have lifted the motor 10ft and dropped it again in Anglesey, North Wales.

The pair argued after Mr McKeown accused Peacock of taking him “on a wild goose chase”.

At Caernarfon crown court, Peacock admitted dangerous driving but denied deliberately ramming the taxi.

In court, Mr McKeown claimed that Peacock had thrown his chicken tikka kebab but the defendant maintained it had spilled on the floor when the car had come to a stop.

Prosecutor Ryan Rothwell said Peacock had “wanted to teach the man a lesson”. He added: ”You rammed that taxi with the tractor. It’s not an accident.”

He said the car had been lifted “substantially” because Peacock was trying to cause as much damage as possible.

Defence barrister Richard Edwards said :”There was a clear argument between the two and it was getting more and more aggressive.”

Recorder Simon Mills will rule later on whether the defendant did mean to ram the car and lift it, and will pass sentence after further reports.

Taxi lifted into air by Anglesey farmer's tractor after furious row about fare

A farmer lifted a taxi into the air on the forks of his tractor over a fare row with a cabbie.

James Peacock had been drinking in Bangor and disagreed about the cost of his ride home to Anglesey.

When they got to his farm, he got out of the taxi and got into his tractor before returning to drive his agricultural vehicle, fitted with bale forks, towards the hire car.

Mold Crown Court heard how he lifted the taxi into the air, caused it £3,500 damage, and left the taxi driver, who had been standing nearby, with a "scratch" on his leg.

Peacock, 23, was today sentenced to four months in jail, suspended for a year, for dangerous driving.

The judge said he could have killed the taxi driver but stopped short of ruling that Peacock had "used his tractor as a weapon".

The court heard that Peacock, who helped his grandfather Dafydd Peacock run a successful agricultural and groundworks business in Llangristiolus near Llangefni, had been on a night out in Bangor.

The prosecution said Peacock had met friends in Bangor for a drink on March 8 this year and got into taxi driver Paul McKeown's car for the 12-mile trip home at about 1am.

There was a dispute about the fare. Mr McKeown said he thought Peacock had asked to go to the Llangefni area. The defendant, who had been drinking, had said he thought he was going to Llangristiolus.

The judge said Peacock fell asleep on the journey partly through the effects of working all day and partly due to alcohol.

At one point, however, Peacock had "an altercation" with Mr McKeown.

Peacock had a chicken curry takeaway with him and when they reached Llangristiolus, Peacock got out and the food spilt inside the taxi.

The judge said Mr McKeown "sped off" to clean his vehicle. But he returned to Peacock's home and assaulted Peacock with a "wooden truncheon" type weapon.

The judge said Peacock should have left the incident and contacted police.

But instead he walked home at Carreg yr Alltwen, Llangristiolus, near Bodorgan, and made the "ill-judged decision" to get into his blue, New Holland tractor and returned in the tractor to look for Mr McKeown.

He said that Peacock "made the dangerous decision to drive close to the taxi - tired and angry at being assaulted".

But he said he did not find that Peacock deliberately drove the tractor at the taxi and was "not sure" that he had used the tractor as a weapon.

"It's possible he was panicking at the idiocy and recklessness of his actions."

But the judge found Peacock did use the tractors' bale forks to lift the taxi into the air.

Richard Edwards, defending, said his client and his grandfather, in his seventies, run an agricultural business doing hedgecutting, drainage work, constructing groundworks and seasonal harvesting of forest crops.

They also keep livestock on their smallholding and if he was sent to prison would have to send their 79 sheep and eleven head of cattle for slaughter at a "considerable loss".

And no doubt police and/or council action will be taken if the claim is regarded as credible? Hardly beyond the realms of possibility that the farmer just made it up to excuse his behaviour.

And according to the BBC report the taxi driver 'denied' the assault claim
