Horsham taxi drivers in touching tribute to much-loved colleague

Taxi drivers in Horsham have paid a touching tribute to a much-loved colleague.

Carol Marsh was one of Horsham’s longest-serving taxi drivers. And colleagues turned out in force for her funeral on Friday.

But because of current pandemic restrictions the taxi drivers had to keep their distance - and they did so by forming a cortege of taxi vehicles.

A convoy followed Carol’s hearse from Freeman Brothers in North Parade to the Surrey and Sussex Crematorium.

Carol - one of the first woman drivers licensed by Horsham District Council - died on December 10, aged 65.

Colleague Phil Reich said: “You can count true friends on one hand, Carol was one for 25 years, always reliable and dependable. Carol would always help me, and was always there for me.

“I shall miss you, a great loss to the community, sleep well mate. x”

Colleague Joan Carmichael added: “I knew Carol for over 25 years, our sons went to school together. Carol was very quiet, but very professional in her work. “She knew most customers and was very popular with them, as they didn’t need to say where they lived, Carol just knew.

“We ladies used to stick together and chat lots, at least football was never mentioned! Carol will be missed by all of us.”

Another colleague, Viv Potter, said: “Carol was a very kind and caring friend who loved her collection of Teddies.

“We always had a laugh on the rank and Carol helped me with my computer. She always remembered my birthday and I will miss her dearly. Sleep well Carol x”

Colleague Bryan Hoare added: “Carol was a much liked colleague for many years, a quiet lady, but would always chat and have a lovely smile.

“Carol was a hard worker and would always work a full day, even when times were tough. Carol will be missed by all the taxi trade and, I imagine, many Horsham residents. R.I.P. young lady.”

Close friend Patsy said: “Carol was a wonderful and loyal friend for over 30 years. I shall never forget our holidays to Ireland and the laughs we had.

“You will be sadly missed and very fondly remembered.“

Carol’s brother, Peter Marsh, asked to express his huge gratitude to all the drivers who accompanied Carol on her last journey to Worth Crematorium. “It meant everything to know how well liked and respected Carol was,” he said.

Not something I've ever given much thought to, but if I ever write a will I'll included a stipulation NOT to have a taxi roofsign in the back of my hearse, especially if it's got the name of a council on it

Always very nice to see a taxi convoy.

Been in a few in my time, and always goes down well with the family.
