Birmingham's biggest taxi firm is investigating claims one of its drivers was caught on camera dumping mattresses in a city street.

The 'disgraceful' footage above captures what appears to be an A2B taxi pulling up on Brockhurst Road, Hodge Hill before a driver dump items on the roadside.

The driver of the car, with the firm's label on its side, is first seen parking up on the quiet street and opening up the boot.

It then shows him dragging a mattress from the back of the car before leaving it on the pavement, propped against a fence.

Another mattress is then pulled from the back of the car and fly tipped. Ironically, it appears the female passenger is seen picking up a small piece of rubbish that has rolled out of the car and into the road.

She is filmed walking over to the rubbish bin on the street to discard the litter, despite passing the two large mattresses dumped on the side.

The footage was filmed between 6.55pm - 7.05pm on Tuesday, January 5.

Councillor Majid Mahmood, for Hodge Hill, publicly shamed the individual on Twitter as he branded the act 'disgraceful'.

After the CCTV sparked fury with residents on social media, he wrote: "This is disgraceful, and I will be writing to @A2BRadioCars to see if they can identity the individual who has dumped the two mattresses on Brockhurst Road.

"I will be contacting @BhamCityCouncil waste enforcement to take robust action against the individual(s)."

A2B taxis said it was taking the matter 'very seriously' and a 'full investigation' was underway to identify the driver - who the firm described as 'self-employed'.

They responded: "Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We are taking this matter very seriously.

"A full investigation is underway to identify the self-employed driver-partner."

Birmingham City Council said it was also investigating the circumstances as it warned enforcement staff 'can and do' issue fines and take court action where appropriate.

A spokesman for the local authority said: “There’s never an excuse for littering or fly-tipping our streets. It shows no respect to our city or the people who live and work here.

“We all have a personal responsibility to safely dispose of our own waste. We have enforcement staff that can and do issue fixed penalty notices, with court action pursued where this is appropriate.

“As well as harming our shared environment, dealing with waste related issues like this places a strain on our resources and ultimately costs the people of Birmingham money, which could be better spent on other essential services.

“We are currently investigating the circumstances in this particular location, so are unable to comment any further on specific details.”

It is believed the mattresses have since been removed by council workers. BirminghamLive has contacted A2B taxis for a full response.

Taxi driver 'caught flytipping mattresses' on CCTV sacked from A2B as council investigates

A taxi driver accused of dumping mattresses in a city street has been sacked after 'disgraceful' CCTV emerged.

Birmingham and Solihull's biggest taxi firm, A2B Radio Cars, said it had ended the driver-partner's 'engagement' after he was identified as part of an investigation.

The company said he would 'no longer be providing journeys' to this community after the incident in Brockhurst Road, Hodge Hill last week (Jan 5).

An updated statement from A2B Radio Cars read: "Through our internal investigation we identified the driver-partner seen on camera and have ended their engagement with us.

“They will no longer be providing journeys to this community via A2B Radio Cars.

"This incident is also being investigated by Birmingham City Council, and we will co-operate with their investigation if called upon.”

The video footage, filmed around 7pm, appeared to show the driver dragging two mattresses from the taxi onto the roadside.

The clip sparked fury with local residents and Hodge Hill councillor Majid Mahmood - who publicly shamed the individual on Twitter as he branded the act 'disgraceful'.

Birmingham City Council said it is investigating the circumstances around the flytipping at this location.
