It would seem a certain company is now turning to Eastern Europe for its supply of Minicab drivers.

So, once again, we will see a flood of Serbs and Albanians, some of whom may be serial rapists or war criminals pouring into the capital to drive Londons minicabs.

Naturaly these convictions / allegations won't be known to the licensing authority.

Forever the voice of reason.

What about the fact that they cannot communicate with the customer as they don't speak English?

What about the fact that some of them will have previous convictions which will not be known to our authoritys, such as sexual offences, or given the history of the region, potential murder?

I wonder if you would see where I'm coming from if your employers decided to recruit them, cutting your income in the process?

Perhaps if the company concerned payed a decent wage, they would'nt have to bring in more people to a city already bursting at the seams.

Just look at last night, BNP fielded 12 candidates in Barking, 11 were elected to office, imagine in they had put 40 up?
This type of action by Addison Lee mearly fuels situations like Barking.

I still can't understand the difference between the eastern europeans driving LPH and eastern europeans driving black cabs. They are legally allowed to do both.

If your point is they can't talk proper english, then it's the PCO the LTDA need to sort out, not the applicants.

If you point is that they can't be properly checked, then again that's down to the PCO and the gov, not the applicants.

Methinks the Home Sec is a tad more to blame than Addison Lee.

Rape fiend who killed Jeshma gets life
By Martina Smit

Viktor Dembrovskis raped two women at knifepoint in Latvia

A known Latvian sex attacker who raped and murdered a popular A-level student in west London will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Viktor Dembrovskis, 43, dragged Jeshma Raithatha into bushes near her family home in Greenford before he stabbed her over and over in the heart.

The car wash attendant served time for two rapes in Latvia before he was allowed to live in UK since 2004. Like Jeshma, he assaulted them at knifepoint, the court heard.
"We have to ask how and why this came about," the teenager's family said today. "What checks were made about his background before he was allowed to set foot on British soil?"

An Old Bailey jury unanimously convicted Dembrovskis on two counts of rape and murder. The judge sentenced him to three life terms and imposed a whole life tariff.

But they don't drive Taxi's in London, they would have to speak and write in English in order to complete the Knowledge.

My point is, if the London Minicab trade paid a decent wage instead of lining the company directors pockets so much, there would be no need to bring even more East Europeans into London with their unknown historys, which in turn fuels the BNP cause.

Addison Lee may only bring in a couple of hundred, but its still fueling the problem, and further cutting the wages of those already in the industry.

Labour immigration policy.

I thin the problem is that if an employer has to rely on immigrant labour then, as GBC says, they clearly aren't paying enough.

Obviously in the cab trade it's a bit different because wages tend to be paid by commission, and it can't be viewed as the wage being offered being too low.

But the principle is the same, because if more immigrant labour is utilised then clearly this will mean less work for the existing drivers, thus lower earnings, and the immigrant labour scenario takes over.

Thus the trade becomes a labour market ghetto for immigrants, which as well as driving down wages for the few indigenous drivers left, but also effectively exploits the immigrants.

its no good saying they shoyuldnt come over.
that battle was lost in the 70s.
so we have to make driver standards better.
and make it more worth while for locals to do the job.

I think Addy Lee will be doing the licenced trade a huge favour by doing this....most of their bike circuit riders are eastern bloc...so they probably think it will work for the 4 wheel circuit.

Big mistake..let them get on with it

Interesting article.

Mr McNamara seems to be claimimg all London cabbies are completely above board when doing their tax returns.

I wonder how many 'forget' their fifth shift of the week?
