City Cabs 4 Jabs: Taxi company's free rides to vaccination site

Image

A TAXI company is working to bring an end to the pandemic – one vaccination at a time.

City Cabs in Brighton and Hove is offering free taxi rides to the Brighton Racecourse vaccination site for the over 80s – if they are living in Brighton.

The initiative is currently being funded by City Cabs boss Andy Cheesman, who has been paying the cabbies out of his own pocket.

However, a city publican is helping the company expand the “kind-hearted” initiative by raising £5,000 under the banner “City Cabs 4 Jabs”.

Mr Cheeseman said: “We were approached to see if we could help get the over 80s, who did not have any transport or family to help them.

“We have stepped in to do just that – it’s a very small gesture to help the NHS, the patients and the city in this difficult time.”

The self-employed drivers are working at a discounted rate to help get the over 80s to the vaccination site.

After hearing about the initiative, Caxton Arms boss Brett Mendoza started a fundraiser to help fund its expansion.

He said: “The kind-hearted owners and management team are doing something amazing in these difficult times.

“Any money raised will help pay for the elderly and vulnerable people in our community to a free taxi to get them to the Racecourse for their Covid vaccination.

“The target is to raise £5000, which equates to 25,000 driven miles that is once round the world.

"That relates to approximately 500 journeys from Brighton to the Vaccination Centre at Brighton Racecourse, which is ultimately 500 lives saved.”

If you know someone within the Brighton area, who is stuck and needs transport to the Racecourse, please call City Cabs on 01273 205205.

Mr Mendoza said: “We want to help as many people as possible, providing a safe, clean taxi service for all those that need it, this a great way to put the elderly and vulnerable at ease, as well as help us all see the light at the end of this long and dark tunnel.”

Steve Darby, who is helping run the City Cabs 4 Jabs initiative, added: “We all want to help each other, this pandemic has shown the remarkable resilience of our city.“

My understanding is that drivers will get 90% of the fare, which I'm certain can be got around.
