Two charged after taxi driver left seriously injured in Colne attack

A man and a woman will appear in court charged in connection with the serious assault of a taxi driver in Lancashire.

The victim, a man in his 60s, suffered serious neck injuries during the incident which happened on Tuesday, February 9, at around 7.45pm on Ruskin Avenue, in Colne.

He remains in a serious, but stable condition in hospital, said Lancashire Constabulary.

Liam O’Callaghan, 23, of Ruskin Avenue and Jamie Birkett, 21, of Hope Street, Nelson have both been charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and will appear before Preston Magistrates’ Court this morning (Saturday, February 13).

A police spokesperson said: "We would like to thank everyone who responded to and supported our previous appeals in relation to this incident."

Police are asking anyone who has any information about the assault, including anyone who may have dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage to get in touch.

Anybody with information about this incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 1192 of February 9th. Alternatively call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Man jailed for violent attack on Colne taxi driver

ImageImage

A man has today (Monday, November 22nd) been jailed for an attack on a Colne taxi driver which left him with life changing injuries.

Liam O’Callaghan (pictured left), 34, of Ruskin Avenue, Colne was handed a four-year sentence at Preston Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm (GBH).

O’Callaghan’s accomplice, his girlfriend Jamie Birkett (also pictured right), 22, of Stocks Road, Preston was handed 16 months’ imprisonment at Preston Crown Court in September for affray in relation to the assault, which happened on the evening of Tuesday, February 9th.

The victim, a 61-year-old man, had gone to collect the pair from O’Callaghan’s address in Colne.

They advised that they wanted to travel to Burnley and so he asked them for the fare up front. They refused and as a result, the driver advised that he would not drop them off, opening a rear door to allow them to exit.

Both O’Callaghan and Birkett then became aggressive as they were leaving the car, with the pair separately pushing him. After being shoved by O’Callaghan, he fell to the floor leaving him unable to move his arms or legs.

Speaking after the sentencing, the officer who investigated the incident, DC Matthew Bourne from Burnley Police, said: “I am pleased with today’s result which reflects the severity of the assault, resulting in the victim suffering serious and life changing spinal injuries. He had to endure months of rehab, during a national lockdown and not being able to see family for support.

“What is all the more shocking is that all the victim was doing was asking for a taxi fare up front before setting off, which he was perfectly entitled to do. He is working incredibly hard to come back from his injury and I hope that now the court process has concluded, he is able to move forward with his life.”

Is that some sort of new metric system for people's age?

And the original article said he was 23 :-s

Seriously, though, looks like they've had a hard life. What a tragic pair, and I actually feel a bit sorry for them
