Nothing particularly new here, apart from the comment about 20mph zones etc making cabs an easier target for the neds. But stone throwing at buses has been a big thing in Edinburgh recently, and I think some services had to be suspended. So by the looks of it maybe City Cabs here trying to make the point that it's nothing particularly new for the trade. And, of course, there's the perennial problem that highlighting these things maybe encourages copycat incidents, which is also maybe being implied here, and why normally these things are kept quiet Edinburgh taxis attacked by vandals as boss calls for police to protect drivers https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/ed ... s-20257041 Exclusive: City Cabs have spoken out that their drivers are receiving the same treatment as Lothian Buses from anti-social youths ![]() Image: Edinburgh Live An Edinburgh taxi firm has spoken out after several of their drivers have had their vehicles smashed and targeted by anti-social behaviour over lockdown. In recent weeks there have been several reports published surrounding acts of vandalism towards Lothian Buses, with bus drivers left shaken after having stones launched at them while driving. Now, City Cabs have come forward to "point out that this sort of anti-social behaviour is in no way isolated when it comes to similar incidents directed at taxis". Speaking to Edinburgh Live, City Cabs company secretary Les McVay said: "Whilst the Edinburgh Taxi Trade welcomes the recent initiative by Police Scotland through Operation Proust, our drivers and vehicles are routinely targeted throughout the year in some regions of Edinburgh. "It has become so common that these incidents are no longer reported to the police as our experience in these matters is that little can be done to catch the culprits". Unlike drivers of buses, all of City Cabs vehicles are operated by their owners, meaning any damage to the vehicles is paid for out of the drivers own pocket, Les explained. "All of our vehicles are owner-operated, which means any damage caused by this anti-social behaviour means that the driver has to pay for the damage caused," he said. And it's not just the financial cost of anti-social behaviour that's the only issues says Les, as "driving along at 20mph then suddenly finding yourself a target of a group of youths throwing bricks and stones at your windscreen can be quite a traumatic experience. "The offenders often choose locations around traffic calming measures that afford them a slower target to aim for. "As this level of Anti-Social behaviour towards our trade is typical throughout the year, we would like to ask Police Scotland to also help the taxi trade protect our drivers and passengers". Edinburgh Live have contacted Police Scotland for comment. |
