TEN private hire vehicles were checked during an operation into the safety of taxis – and every vehicle was found to have a fault.

The operation, which was carried out by Burnley Council and Lancashire Police, saw 10 private hire vehicles checked at an approved garage.

All 10 were found to have some fault or another, some which were described as serious.

A police spokesman said: “One of the vehicles was fixed at the garage however the other nine were suspended pending the faults being rectified.

“If you would like any information or have any information regarding taxi licensing in Burnley please contact Burnley Council on licensing@burnley.gov.uk. Thank you. P.C.2934 Paul Marsden.”

Doesn't look good, but where to start, apart from the usual misuse of the t-word?

For a start, how were the cars selected for testing? If random, then to a degree the report is fine, if they were targetted for some reason then the report presumably makes the trade seem worse than it is.

Then there's the fact that it's a garage inspection, and not just roadside checks. How many vehicles picked randomly off the public roads would fail an MoT? Quite a lot, I suspect, but the public are rarely checked in that way.

But the worst aspect is the headline, which states nine of the PHVs were 'fault-ridden'. However, the text of the article doesn't support that in any way, in fact the text reads like they only had one fault each, or at least it could be construed that way.

So in the round I suspect the headline and article makes the trade look worse than it actually is. So there's a few predictably critical comments from members of the public on the website. Which is fair enough to a degree, particularly in view of how the information is presented. But couldn't help notice this in particular:

Normally with these types of operation the police have a "target" list of vehicles supplied by the council of cars which repeatedly fail MOT's or have missed MOT's or have been reported as being unfit by members of the travelling public.

They are NEVER Random

Taxis in Burnley have been suspended from use after police deemed them too unsafe to be used as a private hire vehicles.

On Wednesday, (July 10) police worked with Burnley Council to ensure taxis and private hire vehicles used by members of the public are in a safe and road worthy condition to be used to transport passengers safely.

Several vehicles were checked and any vehicles found to have defects were dealt with by the police and taxi licence compliance officers from the council.

Six vehicles were randomly stopped and checked to ensure that they were complying with their taxi licence conditions and two vehicles were reported and suspended from being used as private hire vehicles and carrying passengers with immediate effect.

One of these was also being reported for road traffic offences.

A police spokesperson said: “Today Burnley police have been working with Burnley Council and the taxi licencing compliance officers to ensure taxis and private hire vehicles used by members of the public are in a safe and road-worthy condition to be used to transport passengers safely.

“Several vehicles were checked today to ensure their safety and that they are following the conditions of their taxi licence.

"Any vehicles found to have defects were dealt with by the police and taxi licence compliance officers from the council.

“Six vehicles were randomly stopped and checked today to ensure that they were complying with their taxi licence conditions.

"Two vehicles were reported and suspended from being used as private hire vehicles and carrying passengers with immediate effect with one of these also being reported for road traffic offences.

“We do these operations to ensure you have a safe journey whenever you use such services and the roads are safer for all.”
