Watch: Vicious hammer attack on Handsworth taxi driver caught on CCTV

This is the moment a taxi driver was left “fearing for his life” when he was battered around the head with a hammer in Handsworth.

He told BirminghamLive he was hit three times by a man wearing a balaclava after leaving his Robert Road home at around 9pm on Tuesday, April 27.

Asked to be identified only as Mohammed, he was taken to hospital with severe head injuries and is currently nursing his arm which was fractured as he tired to defend himself during the melee.

In shocking video captured from nearby, Mohammed can be seen approaching his car when another man launches the ferocious attack.

“The person was shouting ‘die, die, die’ at me but god willing I somehow managed to flee from the area,” said the 33-year-old.

“I believe he tried to kill me. He was outside in a silver BMW 3 Series SE for nearly two hours before I came out of my house. I know this because I looked at my CCTV afterwards and saw him waiting.

“He started hitting me with the hammer as I was getting into my car. I was trying to defend myself but then he hit me two more times on my elbow. I ran to the bottom of my street and hid behind a car. I didn’t know what was happening.”

In CCTV footage, at the top of this story, the attacker can be seen fleeing the scene in a BMW. The driver crashed into railings near the Hutton Road/Robert Road junction and part of the car’s bumper broke off. But the attacker managed to escape soon after.

A blood-soaked Mohammed walked back into his house where his family, including his four-year-old son, were waiting for him.

“My son has been telling his teachers about it at school and constantly asking me about my arm which is in a sling,” said Mohammed who has since suffered sleepless nights over the incident.

When asked if he had any enemies, Mohammed said he did not, and had no idea why anyone would want to hurt him.

“I’m a hard-working family man. I pay my taxes and wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.

“We need to catch this individual and bring him to justice – someone must have CCTV footage or know something.”

Mohammed added he feels let down and neglected by police who he claims have barely spoken to him following the attack.

“It’s like they don’t care. If I had died they would be taking this more seriously because it would be murder.

"The MOT garage by me has cameras pointing down Church Hill Road, where the attacker likely came from, but only record for seven days before footage is deleted. If police had taken this seriously from day one they might have a number plate by now."

A West Midlands Police spokesman told BirminghamLive officer has attended the scene immediately after the attack and collected evidence.

They said: "[A] taxi driver was assaulted in Robert Road, Birmingham just before 9pm last Tuesday (27 April).

“He was taken to hospital for treatment for a head wound and a possible fractured arm.

“Officers were immediately sent to the scene and a number of evidential items have been recovered as part of our investigation. Enquiries are ongoing and officers are trying to make contact with the victim in order to take a full statement.”

A West Midlands Ambulance spokesman added: “We were called to reports of an assault on April 27. One ambulance attended the scene. On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to hospital for further treatment.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting crime reference number 20/287792/21 of April 27.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
